hi guys i own an e1705, and lately, when the dvd drive begins to spin at high speeds, such as when playing a cd or burning a cd, it begins to purr, and vibrate loudly. whats going on here? anyone else having this problem?

I have the sony DVD -RW drive by the way. if i keep complaining about this to dell on the phone, will onsite service replace the drive for me? any advice anyone. Thanks for the help.

Mine does the same thing, and has since I bought it. I have the TSST CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. I just figured it was cause it was high speed or something. I'd hate to think I have a bad drive.

not all dvd's are properly balanced, they are just cheap plastic disc. There is no fix, though Nero does comes with a small tool that allows you to change the max spin speed of the drive. Lowering it would keep it from becoming to noisy.

    1. Turn your laptop over
    2. Locate and loosen the optical drive retaining screw
    3. Push the optical drive as far into the chassis as it will go, and holding it there tighten the retaining screw.

    This might work!!!!!

I had the same problem that seemed to happen especially on the XP install disc with a loud farting low frequency vibration sound. When I rang Tech Support to try and get a new drive they recommended the above, and after the drive passed the Dell diagnostic suite they said I wasn't elligible for a new drive. The rep told me to get back to him if the problem persisted but I've since swapped out the drive with another system I returned to them.

Maybe someone here has got my old drive!!

    that's funny, sirius!

I got the TSST DVD+-RW 8x drive. A couple of discs did make loud noises on high spin, but I think it's got more to do with the discs themselves rather than the drive.
