Anyone here has ever tested the battery life of Studio 14 with specs:

I copy paste from the dell.com.sg website:
    http://www1.ap.dell.com/sg/en/home/...aspx?refid=laptop-studio-1450&s=dhs&cs=sgdhs1

    Intel® Core™ i7-720QM processor (1.6GHz, 6MB Cache)
    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64bit (English)
    4GB Dual-channel 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2 x 2GB)
    500GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    14” High Definition 720p WLED (1366x768) Display with TrueLife™
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530
    Slot Load Fixed Blu-ray BD-ROM / DVD + /-RW Combo Drive

I really want to know the rough estimation of battery life and the heat of the processor & graphic card.

    Thanks.

Wow, didn't even realise that this had been released yet. Looks pretty new, can't find anything on it at the moment.

well, I checked the dell singapore website almost everyday because i'm looking for a new laptop for me :D
by the way, yeah studio 14 with core i7 just came out around 2 weeks ago.

    ok never mind,
    how about the studio 15?

I think those two with similar specs have similar heat, don't they?

Quad Core processors are still in the early stage. Hence i don't think that it will help much in power saving when compared to CULV processors.
    It's just my 2 cents...

Man, I'm just blown away with that discovery. If they'd offer a better GPU, I might snap this one up but then again there's the heat.

My guess is this will eventually make it's way to the US. It seems like Japan and SE Asia have become the launch site for a lot of new toys in recent years.

Wow you picked the exact same configuration as I'd like to get except that I'll get a 7200rpm disk. I'm in China, will be buying in Hong Kong for English OS. I'm ordering today as I will be in HK later this week. I'm still not 100% sure whether I'll pick the Studio 14 or 15 though.

Bigger screen and better video card vs mobility and battery life.

Need to make a choice soon...

From another thread, http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=434800 , i see that you're comfortable with the 14incher of the same specs.
However, our pal here, Spystalker is in a different course, hence he doesn't really need a Quad core cpu lappie with dedicated graphic card like you do.

I don't know about Spystalker's course. He choose a laptop with pretty much the same configuration and he waited long enough to get one with an i7. Unless you know something I don't I wouldn't really say he's on a different course. Yes as soon as the Studio 15 equivalent was available he preferred that but I don't know why he does.

But for him battery life and heat is more important than other things. Unfortunately I have yet to get the laptop so I can't comment on that. From what I've read, the Studio 15 can get quite hot but not uncomfortably so. It shouldn't be overheating as far as I know. Haven't read anything about the Studio 14 running hot. I couldn't find a review with an i7 processor yet though.
All I know is that the i7 is more energy and performance efficient per core, but that it consumes more energy when all cores are under load compared to a dual core.
And I can only guess that regarding battery-life the Studio 14 would consume less energy than a Studio 15 because it has a smaller GPU and screen to power with the same battery. Dell claims the Studio 14 can have a battery life of more than 6 hours. Doesn't seem likely to me, maybe they turned off aero stuff and just waited for the battery to run dry.

I have replied to this thread with some links... reviews from the german site. For your reference as well... Especially on the part where they mention on battery consumption and running time.

Anyway, SpyStalker had made it clear on his usage on another thread, but not this forum. He's definitely in a different course.

Regarding the heat issue, i don't think we're able to sense the heat where the cpu maybe situated, except for the dissipating vents. Most likely the hottest part where we feel the heat is will probably from the HDD drive, which i quite common with majority of DELL's lappies as the HDD are mostly located below the palm rest.

Ah so you do know something I don't :) (The world wouldn't be right if you didn't but I'm referring to SpyStalker here.)

Anyway I'm interested in looking at those links but where can I find them exactly? I don't see them in this topic.

I sure hope Singapore dollars are different from US dollars, hee hee.

Dell prices are substantially lower in the States, even accounting for currency rates. And yes, it's a different dollar. ;)

If the I.T related products here, especially notebooks are cheaper than U.S, i can't really think of a reason why some consumers here would rather order from the U.S site and ship it to this small island.

Prices(and choice) of notebooks/laptops are much cheaper in the states.

i am from SG too and i won't say the price is MUCH cheaper. it is cheaper for sure but if you take into consideration the same spec, shipping + insurance, i think you will save S$100+.

the specs in US and SG are different. take for example my 1557, SG ram is 1333mhz while US is 1066. there are still some more differences.

I hope I understand what you meant here & I hope that you didn't misunderstand me.

Can't I also ask other laptop status? This is notebookreview forum right?
Even though I don't buy a laptop with my plan before, But I really want to know the heat issues of Studio 14/15 with Core i7

Maybe I'd change my mind on choosing laptop, I'm so confused right now, I've been thinking about choosing laptop for 2 months, a lot of considerations I have made.
Please do understand my situation. thank you.

Thanks Degine for replying, appreciate it.
However you misunderstood me at this point, I just copied the original detail of configuration made by Dell on Studio 14. And I didn't wait for i7, if core i7 is worse than C2D P8xxx/P9xxx in term of heat & battery issue, then I'll just buy laptop with C2D P8xxx/P9xxx.

you got me here but performance also very important for me.

I've never heard that before, thanks for the info.

i have a studio 1557 with 1080p display and a 7200rpm hdd. my 9 cells battery life is around 3hrs for normal usage (text processing, surf the internet etc)..

heat wise, the normal temperature is 55-60 degrees while using it in Singapore. GPU's temperature i remembered when i was playing street fighter 4, it was close to 80 degrees.

my previous laptop was a lenovo X61s with C2D L7500. in terms of battery life, of course the studio loses out badly. in terms of heat, i think my studio is much cooler. performance is my main concern and the i7 is really fast compared to L7500.

if you need anything else, post here and i see how i can help you.

Heheh... :D :D it's embarrassing... :p :p pardon me for misunderstanding your original intention. Anyway, this is an international forum, and i believe that besides you, there are other potential group of buyers who may share the same situation as you do... Our discussion here may end as an reference to them, especially when there are 2 different type of user here eyeing on the same model here with 2 different needs.

    Cheers.

Got word from Dell today. The have to build it from scratch in Shanghai, test in and then ship it to Hong Kong. Could take 2 weeks. :( So I don't think I'll be able to provide you with my experience in time before your event in Singapore.
Maybe because it's a relative new model, it's been available only since last week.

Interesting, not that it makes much of a difference. Have you checked out the RAM speeds? Could be just Dell calling it 1333.

As for cheaper, you would be surprised. Depending on what you buy and how you buy it, you can save a huge amount. Trust me on that one. For a hint, look at location. <---
    But that's OT.

    Chill. ;)

No. It depends on the lamps powering the LCD. As for the temps, they aren't too bad. High, but not dangerously so.

    Got the Studio 15 today.
First battery life experience with basic use, wireless lan on, backlight on, screenbrightness at about 15%, so what you would use in a dark room: ~a little over 4 hours with a new fully charged battery. There also is an option to use Dell Extended Battery life, but that means disabling Aero, UAC, audio, optical drive and some other stuff. Maybe you could squeeze out the 6 hours Dell claims is possible that way, but kind of reduces the functionality.
Temperature is quite low, but that is to be expected with this type of use.

Will post my experience under full load later. I want to drain my battery again before fully charging it.
Other than that so far very nice, but the F-keys are very odd, which I already knew from other reviews.

Did another test, got a little under 2 hours playing a video. Just enough to finish one movie. It was on my hard drive though, if you'd use the optical drive your battery will probably run dry before you can finish.
    And I have a 6 cell battery.

Been playing Oblivion for 45 minutes. The temperature really isn't much of a problem. The touch-pad doesn't get hot as some people mention.

I didn't monitor the battery life, might do that some other time. I was a little lazy.

A little off topic: the initial layout of the F-keys is a bit odd perhaps, as many people pointed out in reviews, but you can easily change this with Quickset. It's in the C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\ folder.

It's odd, this program is on the startup list, but it doesn't provide a tray icon. Nor is there a shortcut anywhere in the Dell Dock, Desktop or start menu. Note: If you disable it to run at startup you will see CAPS-Lock, Wireless, volume and other changes.

I'm buying a high performance laptop for video editing next week
and Dell laptop meets my requirements. Im choosing between Dell Studio 14 and Studio 15. I also need a long lasting battery and strong wireless connections. Heres the only difference between the 2 Dells laptop (aside from display size)

    Hello from Uruguay (South America)!!

I'm going to the U.S. next week and I'm interested on buying a Studio 14 laptop but I'm not sure about the i7 processor!

I'm a Computer Engineering student and when not at college I'm online almost all day, watching movies or doing some programming. Would it be a problem with the brand new i7 processor? I want my new laptop last for at least 3 years!

Sorry for my crazyness but I don't have much time to decide myself!

Thanks and sorry about my english! :)
