I recommended the Studio 1457/1458 to a friend of mine and she asked me to order one for her in the next few weeks. I've been watching the deals online and there's actually a decent one for $724 (Core i3-330M, 4GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HD, Intel HD graphics, Backlit keyboard, 15mos McAfee, 2-yr Basic Warranty). I just have one question...

Is the 14.0" HD+ (1600x900) display shown in the Tech Specs still not available for order?  It doesn't appear to be available on any configuration of the Studio 14, but the Studio 14z was always available with both the 720p and 900p displays....what gives?

    Dell irks me!

I had to demand my 1600x900 screen. It took three tries of them sending the wrong 900p screen for them to get it right. You cannot order it on the website. As far as I know, the only US displays that were 900p were the kits sent out to reviews (gizmodo, engadget, etc). They definitely have them, but the Dell people do not have a clue as to which screen it is. My hardware ID is MONITOR\LGD0208. Maybe you can get a sales rep to add that to your system.

EDIT: they gave me the 900p screen because my Studio 14 was a replacement system and the 720p screen was not equal or better.

i called in dell home customer service rep @800.624.9897 to ask for a return b/c i wanted a higher screen resolution, preferably 900p like yours...
and was informed that they dont send out replacement lcd screens for laptops
-and didnt even want to check or refer to a supervisor

how else would i go about getting a 900p screen?

They do send out replacements. I have gotten 3 for this laptop and 3 for my XPS 1340. Maybe she meant they don't send out upgrade screens. Again, the only reason I got a 1600x900 screen is because it was part of the agreement for my replacement system.

Chevychic55 - not sure if you are still around or not and sorry to dig up such an old thread. I've got a Studio 1458 that I am trying to upgrade to the 1600x900 screen. I've tried one screen unsuccessfully and am working on getting the right upgrade (through a 3rd party, not Dell). Any chance you have the entire model number of your 1600x900 screen? It looks like it is manufactured by LG, but the hardware ID you mentioned does not really show up in any searches. Also, can you please let me know what version of the BIOS you are running. Apparently they can code the BIOS to allow the laptop to work with certain LCD panels (or so I've read). When you installed the panel, did you change anything else? inverter? video cable? Do you have integrated graphics or a video card?

There are quite a few people in the Official "swapping the XPS 14 L401x screen" thread that are swapping out similar 1366x768 14" screens to ours and have been succesfully using an LG panel. I'm just trying to see if the part #s match as the panel from the XPS 14 thread did not work in my laptop. Not sure if I had a bad panel or if it was incompatible.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    jstoddard,

sorry to revive an old thread, but I can't PM you as you have too few posts.

Did you ever get this resolved and working? I, too, ordered a 900p LG panel for the 1458, and swapped it out (very easy). BUT, it does not work. I must be missing something.

    The panel I bought was a LP140WD1 (TL) (A1) 14.0" HD+ LG Panel.

Please post details if you were able to get a 900p panel installed in a 1458 that came with a 768p display.

    thanks.

Just to follow up for anyone wanting to upgrade the LCD panel in their Studio 1458 from the 1366x768 to 1600x900 resolution, I figured out that I had the correct 900p panel (see previous post for part number) BUT, you also need a new video cable. It's DP/N 0P550R (or look for P550R). If anything, the cable is a bit thicker than the original cable (0FX738), but with this cable the the panel above, it works wonderfully and looks fantastic.
