Looking to purchase an Outlet Studio 1458, cheap. Want to drop in an i7-820QM that I have.

What is the minimum system I can buy that will be compatible with an i7-820QM?

I see some systems have just Intel HD graphics and some systems have the ATI graphics. Can I buy an i3-based system with ATI and drop in my i7 chip or are there two different system boards for i3/i5 systems and i7 systems?

Do I need to buy an i7-based system to start with?

    Thanks!

Yes you can drop an 820QM. Whether it's worth it or not depends on your usage. If you get Intel HD graphics you cannot go to a quad core i7, only i3/i5 and dual core i7 has onboard GPU. If you have the ATI graphics you can upgrade freely to any processor. If you want an i7 the best values are going to be the 720QM/740QM

thank for the info! I've got an i7-820QM that I bought a while ago, just waiting for a home, so I think the 1458 might be what I want to do (one with 900p display). I've currently got a Studio 14z with the 900p display and it's beautiful.

I just wanted to wait for the right deal at the Outlet to come along, score it, and drop in my i7-820! :D

I see there are 512MB ATI and 1GB ATI versions for the 1458...either will work with the i7-820QM?

Yes either will work. You might want to update your BIOS to the latest version. And if you can, I clean off the heatsink's thermal pads and use thermal paste, but only do this is if your cooling system allows you to.
