I found this in one of the reviews of the 14z:
Is there a way to change this back to standard laptop functionality? I use the function keys quite a bit when I am working and very rarely need to adjust volume or pause music.
This is most likely a deal breaker for me. If I can't get standard F-key operation on the Studio, then I will have to look elsewhere.
Thanks,
Pete

On my Inspiron, you can change it in the BIOS and I have made that change mainly because of F5. I imagine you can do the same on the 14z.

Yes, there is a BIOS setting on all Dell laptops equipped with dual-mode media/F-series keys that allows you to decide whether they should function primarily as media keys or as F-keys. The default setting is media keys, but it takes all of ten seconds to change and save.

Perfect. Thanks for the quick answers.
Now I will just wait until the end of the month to see if anything new is unveiled for the Win7 release party, and then turn my order into the office manager. -
you can change it in the mobility control pannel too!
