Was originally gonna get an XPS 16 but I really don't need all that anyway, when customizing both the Studio 15 and 17 I noticed some flaws like:

Why does the Studio 15 have BLURAY and the 17 DOES NOT?
Why does the Studio 15 have 1080p resolution and 17 DOES NOT? If because of the bluray then the Studio 17 really should have that on a 17" screen?
Where is the fingerprint reader on the Studio 17 when its there in the review on this website.

What's the better system to buy? I personally think the Studio 17???

The Studio 15 was recently refreshed - hence the better options on the 15. The Studio 17 has not been refreshed for quite some time; though I'd have thought it should be due one soon.

Better system to buy depends on what you need from it. why not try posting up the FAQ from the What Notebook Should I Buy forum.

The Studio 17 can be configured with WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution, which is actually more than 1080p (1920x1080), so the 17 wins there. As Fragilexx pointed out, the Studio 17 hasn't really changed since its initial release, while the Studio 15 (originally 1535-1537) was refreshed earlier this year, and made into its current form, the 1555.

As for the fingerprint reader, Dell probably stopped offering those in order to push out their new FastAccess facial recognition software.

Thanks, However I didn't see the 1920x1200 anywhere on the choices for the studio 17?

I think its pretty obvious dell is trying to phase out the Studio 17 and desuade people from customizing it or buying more models, eliminating Bluray and RGB LED, and some CPU choices they want you to buy the and configure the pre-built stock and only configure with certain things very cheaply.

I bought my 1737 for $1300 last December, with a free Dell Mini 9, and really Spec wise and components theres never been a better deal and I check and configure for fun a 17 just to see, what has changed.

You can see how seriously Limited the Studio 17 choices are now, I would expect a Refresh with DDR3, Maybe Mobile Core i7 or Core i5, a new ATI 4000 series card, with in the next month. A System like that would really out the $1,300 deal I got less than a year ago to shame and Spec wise DDR3 with Core i5 or Core i7, and 4000 series ATI card would cut my 1737's re-sale value in half.

might be time for a pre-emptive sale.

If I can get $900 I would be happy

    T9400 2.53Ghz 6MB cache 1066Mhz FSB
    intel 5100 802.11n Wifi
    4GB RAM
    Bluray
    RGB LED Screen
    backlit keyboard
    ATI 3650 256MB
320GB SATA II 16MB cache HDD

works perfect But it is clear Dell is re-launching a new Studio 17 maybe a Studio XPS 17 or not but if its Core i5 or Core i7 based I will poop myself.

people will buy them like Turkeys on Thanksgiving

    Core i5 or Core i7
    DDR3 RAM
    RGB LED 17" Display
    Bluray drive

at DELL Prices it would put Apple to shame.

Yeah I was gonna ask when they planned on coming out with new laptops, I plan on waiting til after Windows 7 is out to order. So sometime at the end of October early November.

So the Studio 15, that's a good laptop?

    I'm enjoying my Studio 15.

As for the Studio 17 refresh (if they even do one), I would not count on mobile Core i7 or i5. Most likely it will be similar to the Studio 15 refresh, with the same line of C2D processors, and an upper mid range ATi 4-series GPU, maybe the 4650 or something.

As Mastershroom suggested, I wouldn't suggest keeping your hopes up for Core i7/i5 CPUs in a refreshed Studio 17 range. Remember that the Studio range is not their top performance series, that is typically reserved for their XPS and Alienware range.

right so put a Mobile Core i5 in the Studio 17 (later on the 15 not now it just got refreshed)

And save the Mobile Core i7 and Quad Cores Extreme for the Alienware and XPS lines

And as far as you guys saying a refresh is unlikely I take a look regularly at the studio 17's and they are down to 2 Configurations only even when you configure or personalize theres no more RGB LED. Option

    Bluray is gone.

They obviously do not want people buying these things they have made it a budget second rate machine really trying to stay sub $1,000 and clear out stock.

Considering when DELL announced the Montiviniea refresh last year, timing wise was in October November I would expect a similar move around the same time.

I could only dream for a Core i5 based unit that would be huge. too Bad its still only 45nm

I will buy when its 32nm.

Even their brand new top end Alienware M17X only uses Core 2 Quads; they're not going to suddenly give superior processors (i5 or i7) to a mid-range media laptop like the Studio 17. If they do refresh it, like I said, it will most likely be relatively minor upgrades like the 1537 > 1555 transition, so you'd probably end up with something like a 1755.

Just because they don't want people buying them does not mean they are going to refresh it. It simply means they want to make people buy other models. That might be due to a refresh, but it's unlikely. Far more likely is that they want you to buy one of their more expensive machines.

Dell has phased out machines in the past and not done a refresh; there is no reason to expect them to refresh every model.

You cannot base this years release date on one previous years release date. That's like saying you can plot a line graph having only one point to base it on.
