    First off, Merry Christmas :)

We brought a new laptop (studio 15) for our daughter for Christmas. First day it worked fine, but today she came back to it after lunch and the screen saver was on, she moved the touch pad to wake it and the screen just went blank.

Restarted the laptop, and it just won't start up now, screen is blank (no Dell / bios screen).

When you turn the laptop on the battery light, lights up white once then just goes blank. The wi-fi light comes on but no others, the hard drive indicator doesn't light up at all.

When you hold down the Fn key plus the power button, lights flash and the sound LED key lights up and just the wifi, but again nothing on screen or any harddrive light.

We've followed the dell online help, removed battery tried plugging in power cable only etc, same thing.

Any help much appreciated, bit of a let down for our daughter as we are going on holiday for 2 weeks and she was looking forward to having her laptop to use.

Sry to hear about your problems.

    You might try this;

    • Turn off laptop.
    • Remove power cord.
    • Remove battery.
    • Depress power button / on button for 30 seconds.

I've heard about this recently. Apparently it resets the BIOS, which seems to account for a lot of problems. I don't think it can do any damage really, so its probably worth giving it ago to see if you have any joy.

    Hi 72Hundred,

Thanks for the fast reply, tried doing that but unfortunately made no difference :(.

Pity the dell support is not back until next Monday too.

This needs a more technical hand, remove the battery, the adapter and then open up the laptop and locate the CMOS battery.Disable the CMOS battery,u might need to use soldering iron to remove it,I actually haven't opened up the laptop,I just bought a new one 2days back. After removing the CMOS battery, assemble and power it on.If it works, fix the CMOS battery back so it won't be asking u to set your date and time anytime u power on

Don't listen to this guy, you'll never need a soldering iron to fix a laptop! Just contact Dell XPS support, I've found them to be very good. They should either replace something / whole laptop. Not ideal, but better than frying the whole laptop with soldering irons  .

I'm almost sure that Dell XPS is 356 days a year service. The call out might only be the next business day, but you should phone them now so that they can schedule the call out for Monday.

Have you hooked up the notebook to an external monitor?

I was thinking the same thing abtnet. Maybe you accidently even hit the key that outputs to an external monitor.
