My Dell Studio 15 is only about 3 months old and I have been having this problem for the last month now.

Every couple of days or so my laptop lockups - the cursor sticks and there's nothing I can do other than power it off and boot it back up and then its fine for the next couple of days.

This is random... sometimes it happens when doing something intensive, sometimes it happens when its just sitting idle on the desktop after it has only been switched on for about 5 mins.

Any ideas? Is it software or hardware related?

Would Dell (UK) even do anything about this?

I have installed the latest BIOS and the problem is the same.

Go to control panel > administrative tools > event viewer and have a look for any warnings that have happened around the same time as the freezes. It is likely software related, and this might help diagnose what software is causing the problem.

what have you installed in the last month? i would suggest a system restore to about a month ago, see if that helps.

Good idea, but try my suggestion first, system restore could be an unneccessary evil if it is just one application and you've installed lots recently.
