I just got a brand new Studio 15 laptop a couple of days ago. So far, I love it, but there's one really odd thing. All day, the mute and volume up buttons have been blinking, and the volume down button has just stayed lit. There does not appear to be any reason for them to be doing this. Also, it's not affecting the buttons' performance. Does anybody have a theory as to why it's doing this? And is there any way to make it stop? I know it's not a huge deal, but the blinking is kind of annoying. Thanks!

Yeah it happens to me sometimes. I just restart or keep it there. I wish they would all stay lit like that. It hasn't been happening lately to me though. Maybe flash your bios.

It happened with me too starting on the second day I got my Studio 15. Restarting always solved the problem but it comes back every once in a while. Now my touch buttons dont work and my fan goes to full speed when the system isnt even warm. I think there's something wrong with the cables being improperly seated inside the computer. A tech is coming tomorrow to replace the fan. I'll see if I can have him take a look at the keyboard/media button connections when he's here.

I would suggest reflashing your BIOS, you can get if from the Dell dowload page. That should fix it.

    also try this:

    it worked for me

    shut down your computer
    remove the battery
press and hold the power button (with the battery out) for about 10 seconds
put the battery back in and continue as normal

take out power cord. i did same works fine. disconnnect battery power everything. then press n hold for 10-15 seconds. this completley drains all power from notebook and resets those touch keys.

Mine does this sometimes but it always happens after a failed shutdown. I will shutdown the computer, close the lid but it does not shut down. When I re open the lid the pc is running and the buttons are blinking

I too have the same problem. I purchased mine jul 08 and ever since I got it, the blinking volume(mute & up volume) has been constantly blinking. The only way to reset it is to restart the pc. Seems like everyone here have the same issue. I'm a dell certified tech and I can tell you all that I looked up the blinking panel, which I have access to Dell's resources, that the blinking according to dell's documentation, is a usb port issue regardless you have plugged in or not. It also states to replace the mobo. Updating the BIOS isn't gonna do you any good. I already tried that option. So call dell tech support and have them replace your mobo since it's still under warranty and it's a new model from them. I can tell you all that's what I'm going to do!

    P.S.
Some of you probably also notice on your sys tray a usb icon will pop up and then close thinking there's a device that's plugged in eventhough there's none. Really annoying!

I have the same problem, I noticed that the blinking "Mute" and "Volume Up" only blinks after i leave my laptop charging overnight or when i leave it plugged in and close the lid when the battery is already almost full.

So maybe its a sign from the laptop to unplug it because its fully charged.

idk if this may be the case for you guys but thats the reason it happens to me.

I have a new Studio just 6 months old. I have already been frustrated with it. This is my worst dell. I have owned and used 4 other Dell notebooks.
I have the exact same problem. Hey Dell engineers, it might be a good idea to read these forum pages. It might help improving your computer. It is unbelievable to see how many users are having the same problem.

Maybe this is why the 1555 and 1557 models have the volume controls on the keyboard.

I hope someone here has a solution for you guys.

It's sad that they took a way a cool feature (the touch buttons with lights) just because they didn't bother to test the thing out properly.

Maybe they should have tried fixing the problem as opposing to circumventing it...

The funny thing is that I have the EXACT same problems on my HP-Compaq 6530b notebook. Touch-sensitive volume buttons (especially the PLUS) keep blinking as though constantly being pressed, during which the mute button doesn't work. Am getting the occasional device plug-unplug sounds, although no devices are detached or attached for that matter. The problem appears especially (but not strictly limited) after I plug-unplug the power supply. Restarting does the trick, but when the buttons are blinking and I shut down my notebook, it actually doesn't shutdown, but restarts itself. Flashing the BIOS didn't do squat. This issue is really frustrating because the system, perceiving a constant push of buttons, acts appropriately: eg. pressing backspace deletes just a single character, no matter how long it's being pressed. Cannot commute from different applications using the icons in the taskbar (Windows 7): Hovering the mouse on them doesn't have any effect whatsoever and I can only commute from the Task Manager with Switch To. The notebook's outta warranty since October. Have any of you managed to get past this issue?

P.S. I experience the button clipping even in Ubuntu, therefore it must be hardware related..
