    Hey,

I got my Dell Studio 15 for about a week now. At random times, I hear a click from inside the laptop; I believe it's from the HDD. Sometimes I don't hear anything for about 20 minutes, then it happens a few times.

Anyone else having this issue? Should I worry about this?

    Thanks

Look in your Device Manager under Disk Drives and see what hardrive you have.

    WDC WD5000BEVT-75ZAT0 ATA Device

    Whatever that means. It's a 5.400 rpm 500GB HDD;

Back up everything you need/have to and call Dell.

A 5400rpm WD hardrive shouldnt be "clicking".

    Hey,

I just called Dell and they told me I don't have to worry about this. They said it's normal for a HDD to make a click sometimes. As long as it doesn't repeat the clicking ("click-click-click-click"), nothing is wrong.

    Any thoughts on this?

All I know is I have a 7200rpm 250gb WD Black hardrive and it has never made any "clicking" noises.

I purchased the model drive for my other laptop. It clicked a lot. I have since swapped it out for a WD 7200 "Black" 320GB. Thus far I have not heard it click once. It is much quieter. Once you go 7200, it would be hard to go back ...

Actually, one of the reasons I wanted to have a 5.400 drive is because I've heard it's a lot more silent than a 7.200.

I've ran HD Tune and everything came back ok. I'll run the Dell Diagnotics this afternoon, but I suspect it will also tell me everything is fine with the drive.

Apart from the ticking (which doesn't happen that much btw), everything seems to work fine.

Bull people. Dell are liars. It's a known issue that theres a clicking noise on the 7200 model, not sure bout the 5400. Google the model number and see for yourself, theres a LOT of people who have had these drives fail after 2 months. Ive been using mine 2 months so far, the clicking started last week. There's a firmware fix for it available online, I'm thinking of dumping this HD before it dumps my data into a land far away. Might just put an SSD in here instead...

@dimodi - it is normal for a drive to click once in a while.

@Bv202 - if it clicks often, call and try to have the drive replaced.

You must be talking about the Seagates 7200.

I have a Seagate 7200 in my Studio now ... so far it has been great! It can get a little warm ... but I find the laptop in general a little warm.

I have the 700rpm 500GB seagate and it is a little noisy only when I am transferring a lot of data to my netowrk drive etc. Otherwise it is quite and makes occasional noise.
If you talk about vibration then that is another story.
