I've had two issues ever since I've had the Studio 15 has anyone had the following:
1. I constantly get a JIT Unhandled Exception screen everytime I reboot or shutdown and sometimes when it loads the desktop requiring me to click continue or quit to get rid of the screen. The error is being caused by Dell Dock because if I uncheck it to load in msconfig there is no error screen plus the error screen mentions Dell Dock. I have rolled back to Dell Factory State three times and most of the time I don't get the error for a couple of days but eventually I do. Dell tech had me uninstall Dell Dock and then reinstall from their website but at some point I end up getting the Unhandled Exception screen back. Dell has given up and want me to use one of their pay techs which I refuse to do because I don't have alot of faith in Dell techs in general. Of course I could just not use Dell Dock but I really like it!
2. I mainly use Firefox and I've noticed after installing it if you look in "Addons" it add an extensive for the fingerprint reader which I believe is causing some problems. With the fingerprint reader extension enabled there are some websites I can't download links from which seem to be random which I can download from and which I can. If I disable the fingerprint extension I can download from any site. Also sometimes I'll have several tabs open and Firefox will hang causing me to close out the browser yet if I try to reopen it, it says it's still running. Opening Task Manager and trying to end Firefox.exe does no good I basically have to reboot the laptop and it usually hangs some at this point I'm sure still trying to shutdown Firefox. Now this could very well be a Firefox 3.0 issue but I really don't think so after having used Firefox for several years it sounds like an extension thing since it already effects my downloads. I have not tried uninstalling fingerprint reader as I have been concentrating on the error screen and also disabling the fingerprint reader extension could very well eliminate Firefox hanging since it fixes the download problem.
Anyone had either issue? I really, really like this laptop and I've not had any other issues some have had. I've had Dell tech support maybe five times trying to fix the error screen but I've come to the conclusion if updating a driver doesn't fix the problem they know very, very little. I've had this for 25 days so I'm past the 21 day return period (lost track of time) so I don't if getting a replacement is even an option. I'm still willing to troubleshoot my problems if I knew what next to try.

i get the JIT unhandled exception too.. usually happens when i shut down but once in a while happens randonmly... does anyone know how to disable the JIT thing? if u read the error, near teh end it tells u how to ignore the error or something..

1) Never had this problem before......but i stopped using dell dock and got rocketdock......(which made/designed dell dock for dell anyways)
2)Install the latest version of the software using this guide -
Well at least someone besides me is getting the JIT Unhandled Exception with Dell Dock but I wonder why if some of us are having this problem why everyone isn't. I wish I also knew how to disable the JIT error screen too because disabling it in IE doesn't work.
I'll see if I'm smart enough to follow somm's guide to fix the fingerprint issue. -
have you guys heard weird noises coming out of your laptop..it's hard to explain the sound, but it's sort of like "doot doot". 2 sounds. it comes up most often when i open up the laptop. i'm not sure where the sound is coming from either. btw i normally dont' shut it off, i just close it..not sure if this is bad but yea. i'm totally a newby with laptops so any help is appreciated!

Thanks rezendevous for the link to updating the fingerprint reader software hopefully that will fix the Firefox problem. Just need to work on first issue now.

I'm having this problem also, any fix as yet? I like using the Dock, but it does cause intermittent problems during shutdown and also when emptying the Recycle Bin, the icon is never cued to the correct bin condition. I'm going to try re-installing it tonight.

I solved any Dell Dock problems preemptively- I trashed it the day after I got my Studio 15! It seemed redundant to me....or am I the only one who uses the Windows Quick Launch Toolbar?

I tried uninstalling Dell Dock that came installed and reinstalled from Dell's website but I still get the error screen that clearly Dell Dock is causing.
For now I'm living with the screen (but I'm not happy about it) because I really like Dell Dock, it's just strange more people aren't having the same problem. -
Dell Dock, I kept it just to try it but I didn't like it, takes some Desktop space + hard to access when you have some maximized application running, that's why I always prefere Windows QuickLaunch, but to be honest I disable it and add custom folders I make seperating categories by using folders so the system & windows apps are first then a small space then Internet apps and space then multimedia + space + graphics app's
much better to access I always keep the Taskbar two times the normal height but it worth it, and it looks very nice in Vista with the Rounded start bottom in the center, I used this Taskbar toolbar from times of Win2000 and still use it in both my Desktop PC and Studio laptop... -

The uninstall/re-install worked until I used the re-cycle bin link. Then again I had the Jit error on shutdown. I'm going to remove it again, re-install and take the re-cycle bin out of the line up and back to the desktop and see what happens. You can see it's flaky, the trashcan icon never displays the proper state of the folder, either empty or containing files, it doesn't change properly.
Anyhow, guess I could live without it and also the google desktop search and the sidebar, just fluff, and not all that useful. I do use Quick Launch, but only put my most used app links in there, the Dell Dock is holding the large array of other stuff I run. I think the Vista start menu is probably more than enough, but I just can't get used to it after using the other versions for so many years. It will take me awhile..lol. BTW, these shutdown errors are not being reported in the problem log that I can see. -
Please post back if removing the recycle bin icon works because I've tried about everything to not get the JIT screen, evidently everyone using Dell Dock doesn't have the problem.

Nope, didn't work. Back to the drawing board. It's really strange, there seems to be nothing different that I'm doing when getting the error as opposed to when I don't get the error. No common denominator. There has to be something else we are running during the session that is causing this. I'll try a few more things, look at the startup logs. I have a feeling there is a conflict with the google sidebar and the dell dock. I'll let you know if I find an answer.

back to the JIT problem, it seems that if u click continue on the dialog box, the dell dock will continue as before, so im not sure what the 'bug' is... i read the whole thing and it says
'When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog. '
i might have a look tonight on how exactly to enable JIT debugger tonight.. does anyone have any ideas? -
I uninstalled Google SideBar when I first got my Studio 15 so that's not what's conflicting with Dell Dock but don't now what is.

Well I uninstalled it yet again last night, cleaned the registry with CCleaner, although there was nothing left over in there from the dock un-install, and then powered down. Re-installed this time with the recycle bin having been removed from the dock before the uninstall, and so far have not seen the JIT error again. No Vista updates to the .net framework or anything else being installed since I started trying to toubleshoot this error. I've shut down about 6 times since re-installing with no error. Maybe the third try was the charm?? Just don't know.
-
My experience has been everytime I uninstall Dell Dock and then reinstall it there wouldn't be any error screens for a couple of days but I would eventually get it back strange as that might seem.

Not strange, as soon as you install something new, like I did last night when I installed the new drivers for the Webcam that were on the Dell Driver Update site, the error came back. So every time we get new Vista updates or do a new install it seems to trigger the problem. Has anyone tried removing the Dell Dock to install the free Stardock application instead? I might see if that behaves better...

Re-visiting this thread after trying a few different things the past few months to fix the annoying JIT shutdown error. I went to Dell update site looking for a new version of the Dock last week and found they have moved the link for downloads to the Stardock site. To get the latest dock software you have to go to www.delldock.com So, un-installed the dock again, this time got rid of the back-up and any traces of the app's folder and installed the new dock. So far it's been fine, no shutdown notices for a week now. Just keep fingers crossed.
