I really don't understand it. I ordered my Studio 15 on the 17th. My estimated shipping date had been today. But today, I got an email from Dell telling me it was delayed for a week.

I don't get it; my stats are fairly standard.
T9300, 4GB ram, ATI video card, 6 cell battery, the WLED LCD (1440x900) display.

It's really making me angry, because I need a laptop of some sort for college by August 19th.

Here's what I'm wondering: should I cancel my order and get something from someone else (I've become a little worried about the Studio being underpowered for my needs, and for the possible keyboard flex), or should I just stick it out and wait for Dell to come through?

I am having the same second thoughts. Everyone seems to be very negative about the studio these days. I hope they are just overreacting.

I need a laptop by Aug 25th for college and I already bought office 2007 so now it has to be a pc

Also while we are here, what is the battery life like on the standard battery.

At the moment I am using an Inspiron 2200 and I can get about 3hrs out of the batter with the screen dimmed and with a 1min setting to turn the screen off.

This laptop cost $450 brand new back in 2005

    **Dell Studio 15
    Part_________________________________________Delay Time
    9-Cell LiOn Battery---------------------------------8 Days
    ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi---------------------3 Days

    But I have the 6-cell, and I didn't get the X-Fi

Maybe I'll give Dell a call.

Damn normal specs (no 9 cell or x-fi bull****) and you got a bad delay. Call and complain and the best they can do is give you overnight shipping. Mine is supposed to come by the end of next week, if I get a delay I'll be verrrryy mad.

    Just called and complained.

Completely useless. I was told that they were "doing everything they could" to get my order completed on time.

Which I know to be a complete lie. I've built computers before, and I've helped build laptops before. It shoudln't take more than a day to build a single laptop.

I understand that they have zillions of orders to complete, but c'mon. I told them when I ordered that I needed it done by the 19th.

I guess I'll stick with Dell for the time being. I know i"m venting to the wrong people, but I kinda don't know what else to do.

What incentive do they have to sit on the order for no good reason?

Have some patience or cancel the order and go somewhere else.

You're right, Yeoman. And I know that they can't rush mine out of line. It just annoys me that I picked semi-normal specs so I could get it quickly, and I keep seeing posts from people whose laptops are flying out of the build phase; even some who have the obvious delay-causers.

I wish I could go somewhere else; my only real option would be to go to one of the sites that sells a pre-built lappy.

The main question of this thread was whether or not the Studio 15 is worth the wait. When I first ordered it, all the reviews seemed positive, but as time has gone on, more and more people have been reporting problems.

EDIT: I just wrote a scathing email, and now I feel a little better. I know it won't help, but I feel like I've said what I needed to say.

This is how I look at the fact that you see more complaints than positive feedback:

MANY people (a majority in my opinion), that buy laptops in this case, come on these forums to talk about problems because it is the only place where people may be able to relate and it is a good place to vent. You don't see so many good comments because the MANY other people that are happy with their Studio have absolutely no reason to come on and talk about how happy they are with it. People who buy laptops and are content have no reason to be on here unless they enjoy discussing their laptops, and most people don't really see a need.

Do you see what I mean?

I got mine earlier, call them and tell them you will cancel if you don't get by this week...
They'll sort something out for you, the force may be with you,.....

I ordered my laptop with a case. A few days after buying it I received an email from Dell saying my laptop case shipment would be late... I got it the next day and my laptop came in 6 days before the ETA.

I am fully satisfied with this purchase. Complaints I have heard from people are about the keyboard flex and the speakers. Sure there is a keyboard flex if you apply pressure but is that really a weakness, who types hard. I must honestly say, and I do use laptops often, this keyboard is one of the most comfortable by far, better than the XPS. The speakers aren't the best, duh. Most people don't find a use for them, I have external speakers and headphones. I haven't heard any popping sound from them either.

If you really want to cancel the order go ahead... but I'm sure you'll get it by the 19th. It's a nice laptop as well, I shopped for 2 months before buying it, HP and Sony's would "do". They're nothing impressive that stands out. They're like the Inspirons.

I notice 2 things that are delaying the Studio right now if you go through the configuration and that is the fingerprint reader and backlit keyboard. These 2 items will delay the order til Sep. Im sure that those of us that already have orders might be delayed for the same items. Be patient.

You're probably not the only customer who gets delayed. Keep in mind that your laptop, mine and many others come from the manufacture in Asia. DELL will not expedite 1 order (sending overnite by first priority carrier) just to satisfy 1 customer. It will cost DELL some extra shipping money.

This business is like a whole seller. Everything comes in 1 BIG container. Once DELL reaches the delivery quota, then they will ship to the destination.

If I were you, I would wait and see what's up, so you can check that flexy keyboard issue. I am also planning to return my Studio 15 if I have this keyboard issue. We have 21 days to return the laptop (and get a refund) from the day we receive it. There has been a rumors that the new DELL notebook will come with a better CPU (Montevina platform) --> September 1st, this is also the day when HP will introduce their new system.

For sure DELL will lower the price again. If this happens, I will jump on this deal and get the new M1530, instead off Studio 15 (IF it comes with better GPU, not the current Nvidia video card which has the temperature issue).

They absolutely have incentive to hold the order! If the value level of the order for Dell is lower there is an incentive to hold it and produce/ship higher value orders first. If an order is placed on 7/16 for a specific configuration for a total of $1,000 and another order is placed on 7/17 for the exact same configuration for $1,200 (a coupon was available on 7/16 that was no longer available on 7/17) there is an incentive to fulfill the 7/17 order first.

Dell has been widely suspected of the practice of avoiding fulfilling undesirable orders.

I used my coupons and received it in two weeks. I doubt they ship it late because I used one of their promotion.

It's a new laptop, the demand is high. The XPS 1330 and 1530 had a bunch of delays when it was released. You all sound like it's the first time you've ordered something online. Things get delayed and move around. I've had to wait two weeks for a store to get a new tv in-stock. It wasn't a big surprise that it hadn't left Asia when I bought it... just like your Studio.

I think you make a great point. I ordered my studio on 6/30 and received it on the 14th, right on time with dells estimates. I LOVE my studio and some of the issues that people are having just dont bother me. I guess it just depends on what bothers you. Overall, I think its a great laptop with minor issues. What laptop doesnt have minor issues?

I ordered a Studio 1535 on July 2 and got a ship date of 8/1.
On 8/1, I got an email saying the order was delayed and would ship on 8/8.
On 8/8, I got another email saying the order was further delayed and would ship on 8/14.

I called Dell on both occasions and got absolutely nowhere expediting order, getting faster shipping or even getting answers as to why it's been delayed twice. My only options are to wait or cancel.

So, what do you think is going to happen when 8/14 rolls around?

My biggest gripe with Dell is that their sales support staff are simply reading from a pre-drafted script! There's no personality to them at all, so it's basically like trying to ask a machine that says "Press 1, 2, 3, 4 etc" to hurry up with your order; falling on deaf ears.

It was the same with my old ISP; they are reading from a pre-drafted script; you phone up knowing exactly what you want to ask, but they have to go through completely useless stages and read out stuff on their screen etc.

I just wish they had some kind of personality, you know, the kind of personality like "Hold on, I'll see what I can do for you" and then they push your order through or something, you know, something that if you ask they'll do, but don't offer as standard etc.

Currently most/all laptops on Dell UK come with free shipping, I wonder what would happen if I offered to pay for the shipping...? Would it speed my order up?

FWIW, I'm not a student, I'm an old man who is a die hard mac user . But I had to shop for something for my girlfriend who needs pc for work.

Anywhoo.. I spent a few hours looking at possble configuraions from other brands yesterday. And the dell studio was clearly the best deal out there, so I'm just gonna wait, knowing that I got the best system I could at the price I paid.

It seems like quite a few people are getting new estimated dates for mid-August. Maybe they are planning on shipping a lot of them out during that time...she said hopefully.

I'm 100% not expecting my laptop to ship out on the 12th which is the REVISED est. ship date. Chances are I will cancel and do something else if it is pushed back to September.

believe me i know what you are going through. i made my initial order back in mid July, it got delayed twice, and during the second delay they called my house and left a message about me having to consent for them to finish the order, well i dint get the message til later that night so i called and it gave me directions to leave my info if i wanted it continued so i did. Next morning i receive an email saying my order has been cancelled and when i call the reason is that i didnt consent! First off i did they just didnt listen to their messages and secondly why do they give you not even 24 hours to reply? what if someone was gone that day and didnt even get the message til the next day? Well i asked, since it was the same day they canceled, if they could just resume my order and they said no, so i guess it didnt take them long to strip apart my laptop or send it to someone else with the same specs, but i had to reorder the laptop from scratch and get a much later ship date with them not giving me anything for the trouble, and i am just now FINALLY supposed to receive it tmr or monday, heres hoping. I think the delay on mine was for the backlit keyboard and FP reader and it seems they are not as big of a problem now so thats good for people ordering them now.
