Yup, the backlight is pretty useful even day light. I really recommend it when you use the system in low light conditions.

    Hi all,

I'm going to buy a Studio 15 laptop (T6400, 3Gb, ATI 3450, wireless 1397 DELL, 250 GB 5400 rpm SATA) and I'm very in doubt about the display quality.

I'm not interested in a large resolution (I guess that 1280x800 is enough in a 15" screen) but it seems that the display with this resolution has a smaller view angle (especially vertical) than the 1400x900 display that maybe is not very good if you spend some time reading documents.

What is your experience? Do you have one of this display on your laptop?

Is the 1280x800 WLED display a decent option or should I buy a 1400x900 one (+80 euros)? Is there any problem with movies (resolution, refresh)?

I'll use the laptop for office job (open office), some (simple) photoshop, some movies.

Welcome also any suggestion about others laptop otions (wireless card, CPU,...).

    Thanks.

If im in my 'work' room, I have mine running through a M-Audio Firewire 410 connected to a Denon bookshelf system. If im not, I have a little Numark USB audio interface I can use elsewhere.

Im searching through the forum now, but does anyone know if the issue where the media buttons come on by themselves (volume up and eject on mine) and stay on for about 5 - 10mins has been resolved?

People are just b*tching about the crappy built-in speakers because they don't have external speakers.

I use a pair of Logitech Z-5 USB speakers and they sound fantastic w/ my 1537.

Anyone know where to go to adjust how high the temperature can go before it's recognized as overheating and shuts down? I've looked in the BIOS but couldn't find it.

Edge-to-Edge display coming to Studio 15

Does anybody have more information on the refresh of the Studio 15 coming up. Check out this link for a Special edition of the Studio 15 - Black Vapor with Red Trim and edge-to-edge display.

It does not give much options for configuration though. I wonder if these will be available soon.

I wonder what the black vapor laptop is about ... the t5800 is the highest CPU you can configure, and it uses x3100 graphics which means it's based on a 1535, not the newer 1537.

When pictures of Studio 15 leaked, the edge-to-edge screen was announced and it was mentioned that it will be made available soon after release. "Soon" does not always mean soon with Dell. I have learnt that from experience.
So I believe that the edge-to-edge, now that it has appeared on one model, will soon be made available. Again, soon! but how long?
Would have been so much simpler if they start offering it on all the Studio 15 models instead of hiding it under some obscure link. I got to find out by looking for coupons. So here's a lead for those who are interested.

I have a 1535 that I got in November. I have been very satisfied with it so far. Every now and then I will lose my wifi connection. I know that I'm getting a strong signal (5 bars). If I restart my PC, it will reconnect fine. Has anyone else experienced this?

Owned my Studio since November also and have no problems but 1. The Speaker icon on the panel stays lit on the "volume higher" part during some reboots and doesnt go off until I reboot the system again. No biggie though.

Well, that was a bit of a 'oh ' moment - just updated the BIOS to the latest revision, and during the flashing process the system locked up completely and the fan was going full blast for about 5 minutes!

it was fine though, sorted itself out.

I updated the BIOS to A07 recently, now wifi is on even if the hardware switch had it off.

It was never like that before A07... Anyone have this happening?

I've only had A07 but don't have a problem with my switch ... there is a setting in the BIOS to control what the switch works on, ie wireless, bluetooth, cellular ... you may want to check that.

I just updated to A07 as well, and the Wifi switch works as intended. Check out the BIOS setting.

FWIW, A07 for my 1537 still doesn't fix the media button issue because it is not software related.

It has been said that uninstalling the IDT drivers and letting Windows Update load drivers increases the quality and volume of the audio.

I agree, though...how could Dell ship something like this out? The audio is barely audible!

    Hi everybody,

New Studio 1537 owner here since Monday (2-16, aka my birthday), thought I would go ahead and share what I got:

    *Jet Black Color
    *Intel Core 2 Duo T9400-2.53 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB, 6MB L2 Cache
    *4GB RAM
    *1440x900 WLED Display
    *250GB 7200 RPM HDD
    *ATI Mobility Radeon HD3450
    *6X Slot-Load Blu-Ray Drive
    *85 WHr 9-Cell Battery
    *Intel WiFi Link 5100
    *Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth
    *Back-Lit Keyboard
    *Integrated Fingerprint Reader
*Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit
*Microsoft Office 2007 Home And Student Edition
*Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy HD Software Edition

So far, I am VERY happy with the machine. This was a big step up from my previous machine, a Dell Inspiron 4000 with Xubuntu 8.02 on it. Blu-Ray movies look FANTASTIC on the LED screen. I cannot believe how bright the screen gets. I honestly think that the lowest brightness setting on the LED screen looks like the brightest setting on a CCFL display! It is a very fast computer, all applications that I have installed on it so far run without hesitation. The 9-Cell battery provides me with mobility options that I did not have with the 4000, as its battery would last maybe 10 minutes. The back-lit keyboard is a VERY nice to feature to have when working in a dark enviroment. And the fingerprint reader is very cool!
I have had a few issues, but I don't think that they're anything that hasn't already been mentioned, including the (in)famous media buttons! Yes, the eject button does sometimes stick at boot-up, but it has always gone away after Windows has fully loaded. The speakers are ok, not the best, but they work. I use Senheiser HD280's most of the time anyway. Occassionally, I will get a message at the Windows log-on screen saying "The (fingerprint) Reader Is Not Detected" Kindof annoying, but no big issue.

Overall, very happy so far. I'll just have to keep using it to see how it continues to perform...

I have a question. With the latest versions of Ubuntu you can create a live USB and I was wondering if it would be possible to create a "live SD". Is it possible to boot the OS from the card reader?. I prefer to take an SD card permanently plug than plug a pendrive every time I want to use linux.

Are you sure you ordered the backlit keyboard? Have you tried the "Fn+Right Arrow" Hot Key?
Are you talking about the WiFi Catcher? Are you sure your WiFi Switch is on?

If you hold it down while the laptop is on, it will show you the available wireless networks. If you press it when the laptop is off, if it flashes and goes solid white, that means there is a network available, if it just flashes and goes off, there are no wireless networks available.

It does nothing on mine. Does it need the Intel Wireless software to work? I just use the normal Windows wireless, no need for an application to do something the OS can do already IMO.

I know that if you have the Wireless Switch off while the Laptop is off, it won't flash. The WiFi catcher application that comes up when you have the laptop on is a part of the Dell QuickSet application

I noticed BIOS A08 was released yesterday for the 1537. As I mentioned in the previous page, A07 created a 'problem' for me regarding wifi. A08 seemed to have fixed it.

It seems that a lot of Studio 15 owners have issues with the mediabuttons or are there a few people with this problem??

I have also this problem and i have complained to Dell, because they couldn't fix it after a lot of reparations, and now i will get a replacement after a lot of calling ^^.

I'm still waiting for this f*****g BIOS update.
For my opinion: a BIOS update will never ever fix the "media sensitive button problem".
WHY: because the f*****g "media sensitive button problem" even occurs during normal operation in a Windows environment.
No f*****g update will ever change this shi*ty behaviour of the most crappy laptop I ever bought.
    F**CK you DELL!

I agree with your feelings, however I still believe it is either a firmware/BIOS issue or a hardware issue BECAUSE the problem occurs regardless of the OS environment. I can reproduce this problem 100% of the time with a cold boot in the morning. If I immediately enter the BIOS setup, the problem remains the same - so it is INDEPENDENT of the OS. It is definitely a more fundamental issue.

However, the reason I do not suspect it is a hardware issue (such as a cable or faulty panel) is because there are plenty of people whom have swapped out parts using Dell's service and still experience the problem. The probability of continuously receiving faulty parts is very slim. Dell is most likely aware of this problem at the factory and is ignoring it or their diagnostics do not include monitoring the function of the media panel, or their test protocol somehow allows the problem to go away before the technician examines the laptop.

If your TV has HDMI or VGA inputs, then you can connect your Laptop to it and watch it that way.
Not sure if that is what you're looking for, but I hope that helps.

Yes, that's what I'm asking. I connected my Studio 15 to my TV using a VGA cable. I set up Monitor 2 on my laptop. What is showing on my TV screen is my desktop wallpaper but no icons. If I open an app, it does not show on my TV. Apparently, there is some setting that I'm missing, but darn if I can figure out what it is. My TV has a VGA port labeled "PC", and that's what I connected to. My remote has an input selection labeled "PC", so it seems pretty straight forward, but all I see is my desktop wallpaper. Any help/suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Monitor 2 is not what you wanted, that's the problem.

If you have an ATI card, open up the CCC (Catalyst Control Centre). In there, you can set whichever monitor you want to your primary display, choose to output to both screens or one screen, or clone the screens.

If you have an Intel card, right click the desktop, and in the graphics options context menu tell it what monitor you want to output to.
