Does someone here have a studio with a blu-ray drive, do you still have the same issues with the eject key? (I hope a BIOS update comes soon to resolve the issue)

I just noticed something odd about the Studio's cd drive. It only supports 24x write...most drives these days support 48x. Is it just me or does everyone have this issue? It's not a huge deal, as I can wait for it to be burnt, or just use a thumb drive, but I still wonder why dell skimped out...

It's not skimping. It's all to do with the noise, power consumption and heat. Faster drives generate a lot more heat and noise than slower ones.

Basically all laptops are a compromise between power consumption, heat and features. A gaming laptop for instance, is never really expected to be off the mains and so can have a rediculous amount of high power components. Similarly an academic laptop is never expected to be near enough to the mains at the correct times so battery life is paramount.

I had an apple mac book pro that I gave away (well sold is more accurate) because although it was trendy, it fried my lap and generally ran hot. I genuinely have no idea why apple thought aluminium chassi was a remotely good idea as it acts as a heat sync and gets warm very quickly. Heaven help anyone who tries to use the macbook pro on a sunny day (I speak from experience)!

24x ain't too shabby since thats actually better than the BD-ROM drive in my Studio17 which is only spec'ed to burn CD's at16x & DVD's at 8x...

Good point Peter. Thanks for explaining...

And Somms, that is skimping. There's no reason a newer technology drive should burn at 16x...

I am looking for some help with connectivity issues. Just got my Studio 15 two weeks ago. I use unprotected Netgear router that is located on the second floor of my house. It worked perfectly the night I took it out of the box. I connected sitting in the kitchen on the first floor and everything was blazing fast. I followed all the prompts and updates and happened to install Norton. The next day I couldn't connect from the same place. I asked around and was told that it was probably because of Norton. I uninstalled it but it didn't help much.
It seems that as long as I am in the room where router is located, it all works just fine. As soon as I go to another room it drops the connection. It is odd because it shows "excellent" or "very good" signal strenght at the same time, yet it cannot connect to the network.
    Any ideas?

I just got my studio today, typing on it now. I am so pleased with it. Comparing it to my 3 year old VAIO this is leauges better, so fast, quiet and cool. And touch wood, nothing has gone wrong with it, and i got it in time for uni, which was my main concern.

Hi I am new to this so please pardon the lame questions. I got my studio 15 yesterday and its great. I went into msconfig like I did in xp and turned somethings off. Well now quickset does not startup only I can start it by clicking on it in programs. Is it needed besides being used for the wifi catcher thing? Everything seems to work fine only the wifi catcher does not work except when it is off. When I push on the button it will It will light up and blink while off. When on it doesn't. Also with quickset on it will pull up a box searching for wifi locations. When I close Quickset it does not work. I am not too concerned about this just need some info for my peace of mind. Thinks in adavnce.

studio 15 with the radion video card and 3gigs of ram the 2ghz core 2 duo processor T5750 I think with a 250 gig HD.

ps Dell tried to help but was not much help. That was on chat last nite.

Quickset is a Dell app that gives you an interface for controlling/viewing your screen brightness, battery level, volume and back lit keyboard (if you have one). When you press the hot keys for ajusting these features, quickset throws a graphical indicator on the screen so you can "see" the adjustments you are making. I'm pretty sure those things still work without quickset but you won't get the graphic that goes along with it.

I do find it irritating that the latest design trend seems to be to put all the ports on the side of the notebook PC, and nothing on the back.

The result? Lots of cable "appendages" sticking out the sides, taking up precious desktop space and turning an otherwise slim and sleek notebook into a octopus! Cables that are always plugged in, like power and network, should be in the BACK of the notebook---out of sight.

Makes one wonder what these highly paid design engineers are thinking? Am I missing some core reason for having everything stick out the side?

parts are still probably delayed again. they told me the studio 15's usually take three weeks o_o i ordered on the 31st of august and got mine today (sept 17th) with an original EDD of sept 23rd. after i complained, they put the EDD to sept 18th/19th :p

you could ask them why there are delays at the moment. that's what i did. ;)

ahh it's soo sexy omfgosh. i too thought that plum purple would be much lighter! nevertheless it's sooo nice <3

Regarding the LED backlit screens...I have three Studio's here with LED screens, two are LG and one is AOC. The AOC is not as bright and vibrant as the LG (not surprisingly). The invoice for the Studio 15 with the AOC says it has an "LG Philips LCD".

If I complain that I want an LG Philips as the invoice says, do you think I'll get a replacement?

Anyone else getting the AOC LED backlit screens?

    Because why?

Because you'd rather have all the cords jutting out the sides of the computer? I don't see a big advantage other than the "coolness" of the look, which, IMHO, is negated by all the visible cords!

Because it allows for good computer ergonomics. Idealistically you want to look down and have the screen parallel to your face.

Not sure how that differs, egronomically, from the traditional hinge which allows you to tilt back the display. The only difference I see is about a half an inch lower, and considering the infinite heights of people, their desks, couches, laps, and chairs, how the new design is ergonomic in all those cases?

This type of hinge design is actually more sturdy and durable, which I believe is the primary reason they did it. A great percentage of laptop failures in the past have been screen failures from damage/stress on the hinges.

Also, if you use the notebook at home a lot with external devices and hate the wires sticking out, you can always invest in a port replicator.

    Hi everyone.

On the 9th I purchased a new Studio 15 laptop.

I finally received it yesterday the 18th and while I was initially happy with my purchase, things quickly went south.

Everything is fine but the screen. I have the 1440x900 WLED. On the left center portion of the screen there is a small white mark that looks like a stuck pixel but looking closer it seems more like a minor defect. This i might have been able to live with but once I looked at the WLED in a dark room I was crushed.

There is minimal light bleeding on the top. No problem there as I can live with that , but the bottom is horrid. The leak comes up at least inches and makes using this to watch movies with the lights out unbearable.

Anyone have any experience with this? I hate to send it back but I can't live with this. Will they exchange it or try and fix it? I want the laptop they exact way I have it. Just not this one...

Which panel do you have--AOC or LG Phillips? Can you check? (Look in device manager, under Monitors, then pick the monitor listed and look at Details, then Hardware ID.)

You have the (IMHO) inferior AOC (or AUO, I forget the brand). The LG is (IMHO) superior to the AOC/AOU.

You could possibly fight it on two fronts.

One: if you are within your 21 days, you can suggest to them you will return it for a refund unless they replace the "defective" LCD. If you are OUTSIDE your 21 day guarantee, then it's up to you to fight your case.

Two: Look at your invoice/packing list. On my Studio15 that came with the AOC panel, my packing list said LG Philips. Hence, if I wanted to, I could have said i didn't get what was listed, and fight that.

Either way, i've found if you keep your cool, and be reasonable with them, you can get pretty much anything you want.
