My sister in another state emailed me that her daughter's Studio 15 gets really hot from her email:
"i think i have told you in the past that cari's laptop gets really hot. anyway she says now it get so hot she actually shuts it down to let it cool off. is there anyway to check it to see if it is the fan or do i just take it somewhere to fix it. we bought it in 2008 so i didn't know if it is worth fixing or what. she has backup all her info on an external drive but would still hate to see her computer fry. it is like yours i think. a dell studio 1535."

I told her three things to check:
    1. See if she can hear the fan running
    2. Run Dell Support Center scan
    3. Run Dell Diagnostics on boot

Is there anything else I need to have her check?

Have her download and install HWMonitor to monitor her temps. It's free and easy to use. Just make sure she selects the set up (not zipped) installation as it auto loads the correct version of 32 or 64 bit. Then, check with other 1535 owners what their temps are.

Also, make sure the vent is not clogged with lint, pet hair, etc.

Well according to the Dell Service Manual for the 1535, it is pretty easy to open up and clean out the internals. Perhaps you'll want to do a repaste job since it is easy. Get a small tube of thermal paste, clean off the old stuff on the CPU and the heatsink.

The only fan inside the Dell 1535 is a CPU fan correct?

If you have a discrete GPU, the CPU fan is also the GPU fan.
