Now i know about the crappy sound quality of the studio 15 which i am sad to say mine has too, but another concern is the touchpad. The touchpad seems subpar. When i am moving my mouse around the mouse seems to randomly jump around a lot and not always read when my finger is moving over it, and also sometimes it doesnt register me tapping to click. Ive tried messing with the settings on the software they give for the touchpad but nothing has really helped the problems. Does anyone have any ideas? Also has anyone noticed around the front edges any weak spots or noising when applying even the slightest pressure to the wrist rests or on the actual outside edge part of the casing not completely sealed all the way? i am considering calling dell and complaining about the ****ty work they did putting this together. I know its just a plastic case so i shouldnt expect quality like on an XPS but Inspirons seem better built than this too and a 2 year old compaq with a similar design didnt even have these problems. I have noticed the XPS 15 inch has gone on sale recently to be about the same price i paid for this, should i possibly return this and buy that? ive only had this about 3 days and ive read they have a 21 day return policy in America, you think theyd let me do that with not much trouble?

-
yes....with no problems at all
-
About the exchanging for an XPS? Really? Thats good. This is a great laptop despite the small minor issues, but the only reason i got this instead of an XPS was the price issue, but since its on sale id like one of them as I am a moderate gamer and would like that Geforce 8600, hopefully the heat issues are resolved now. Ive heard about some restocking fees tho, would i be able to get around that? Im thinking of calling tomorrow to ask about it, i just hate it cause the people on the phone over at dell never seem to know much.

I like my Inspiron's Synaptics..I am so used to rolling my finger on the pad and letting it auto-scroll. Can that be done on these ALPS?
-
-
o ok, yea thats what i meant. i doubt theyd let me do an actual exchange i just wasnt sure if theyd let me just return it like that without having to pay any fees. Ive had tons of trouble with paying restocking fees at Best Buy but i guess since Dell is the factory its a little different.
-
they charge a 15% restocking fee, atleast thats what they told me
-
yea thats what i thought, any thoughts on how to return it without having to pay? If something is wrong with it will they return it without the fee? As long as its within 21 days of course.
-
yea probobly if u speak to some representative and give them a good reason im sure theyll be easy on u about the restocking fee
-
alright cool ill see what i can do tomorrow, like i said since its on sale now i would be ordering an XPS anyway so maybe they will work it out. Either way, anyone have any suggestions about the mousepad device in case i cant return this?
-
id just get a cool mouse to use since their a lot easier and more convenient to use especially since nowadays their all cordless and everything lol.
-
yea good point lol

Try disabling programs one by one and see if that helps. I had a temperature monitoring program running and suddenly my mouse was all jumpy and I started having all sorts of problems with it. I just disabled some running programs one by one and when I closed that one, viola! The mouse was back to normal.
See if that helps...its way easier than returning it!

According to the quote above, restocking charge is waived for a "defective product" which arguably the Studio 15 touchpad appears to be. Unless it's something fixable with a BIOS or driver upgrade.
-
Yea i called Dell today to ask my options and after explaining the situation about the mousepad and the desire to purchase an on sale XPS she said i was within the 21 days and therefore eligible for a full refund. I asked to make sure it was a full refund and she said yes and there was no mention of a restocking fee whatsoever. i was gonna ask to make sure but i decided it would be smart to not remind them of the option.

My touchpad is so-so and I have a little creak where the pal and body are sealed. Maybe from all the hdd heat?
-
There is nothing wrong with my touchpad. The tapping, moving around are fine.
-
yea thats where the most of my creek is too and thats where the plastic has already seperated a bit, but yea the mouse problem has just continued to not change so im returning this for an XPS, not just cause of the mouse but cause theres a really good deal on an XPS right now

Got a new Alps touchpad driver for x64: R188753. It seems to help a bit.
-
if you do a search for alps you will find a number of problems with their newer touchpads.
i had the same issue as you on my studio and returned it. the sony vaio i have now has the same touchpad and the same issues. a new driver helped solve things, but it's still not as good as a snyaptics model.
send it back.... -
I think my old Inspiron 700m has a better touchpad than the studio one, although the studio one works fine most of the time.

Try clicking the Dell Touchpad icon in the tray, going to Touchpad Settings and disabling or minimizing TouchCheck. It's apparently some feature that prevents any actions from happening if you accidentally go over the touchpad with your palm.
-
that's not the problem. it's really jumpy for no reason, randomly opening windows, and moves from once place to the other. it's some really frustrating b.s
i dealt with dell tech support 3x with this and no resolution before I sent it back -
yup thats the same thing mine did and like u said after a while it gets really annoying. I wasnt able to get much resolved on that laptop, so i just returned it for a full refund and am now waiting for my XPS to arrive. Yea someone else said before to turn off touchcheck or whatever its called but that doesnt fix anything
