Alright, ever since I did my bios update on my studio 15, I have had some issues with the fan (which is pretty much since I got the thing). Sometimes it runs normal, I use the computer, fan turns on in its "low" mode, making just the light hum that you can barely hear, if I game, it turns onto medium, etc etc. But sometimes (more often than not really) the fan just turns on and stays on its HIGHEST speed, nonstop, to the point where my cpu temp has actually dropped as low as 28 degrees with the fan still running non stop. Its the main fan, on the back left that keeps running. But, there seems to be a slight solution. If I life the left side, specifically the left side, corner closer to me, the fan eventually stops, the computer runs normal and all.. just as long as I keep that corner lifted. If I even place my hand on the underside of the computer there, the fan turns on again, full blast. Now, I know this could be crappy sensors, or it could be my power management system (vista's default one i think)... But I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas, since I would rather not have to send it back for 2 weeks just so they can change a stupid sensor. So ya, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just use i8kfangui. Download it, make temperature fan presets, so the fan only turns on this specific setting at this specific temperature, and then put it on automatic temperature control. It'll then cycle the fans according to your settings. Just make it so i8kfangui starts up every time and you're set.

I had the same problem my friend, and Dell replaced the fan/heatsink part....
Call them and explain this, they'll replace it, and the problem will be gone!
I'll show you a video, my fan did this too, and everytime I lifted the laptopp it stopped!
i8kfangui doesn't solve this, I tried it too... just call Dell, they will replace the fan

Well, sounds like my problem... although I honestly can't afford to to send my computer away for two weeks :S not at the moment in any case. The earliest time I could do so is December... About how long did it take (or does it usually take) when you send something back in to dell?

Depends in part on your warranty, however I think the typical period is something like 15 business days (3weeks - one month). 5 of those days would be the time you spend waiting for a box to show up for you to mail it in.

Lol, so odd. My fan has been acting a bit funny too. Usually I don't even notice when it is spinning loud, but I will once in a while.

Right now it was spinning medium when I read this, and the second I lifted the left side it turned off.

Sometimes it spins really high for no reason, but I don't even notice unless I'm in ned.

you guys have the same problem I had, I had to purchase the NBD Warranty (Next Business Day), and this way a tech guy comes to your place and replaces the part.... $165 pretty expensive...

My S15 is having the same problem. I noticed that when the fan is acting weird (when it's on full speed for no reason) my media buttons dont work (they light up but don't actually perform the functions).

A tech is coming out in a few days to replace the fan. Hoping it'll be fixed for good.

Mine's been randomly loud too...I don't wanna wait for a tech to repair, since I need the laptop for school :\
Hopefully i8kfangui fixes this or another solution appears soon!

Which bios update did you get? The one on the Dell driver website is from July.

And the Studio 15 speakers just aren't very good. I use external speakers and the sound is perfect. If I'm not home I use headphones, and the sound is fine.

When I ordered those 2 years ago it only came with 2 speakers and the subwoofer thing or w/e it is. I might need to order that now, 5 speakers for 50 bucks is sweet.
