I recently bought a Studio 1535 and Ive not even had it for a week yet and every time I turn it on after its been off for more than 8 or 9 hours the light for the eject button is automatically lit up, then once windows has started the eject button stays lit up and for about 5 to 10 minutes and none of the touch sensitive buttons work, then eventually the CD drive will eject what ever is in there and the light on the eject button will go off and all the buttons will work normally. Im finding this incredibly annoying.
Does anyone know of a solution to this or does anyone know if Dell is working on a fix?
-
I have seen something similar happen to me once or twice too....
What wireless card do u have? I know that this may sound odd but can you try to switch off your wi-fi (Use the slider switch on the right side) and see if the problem goes away. -
I have the Dell 1510 wireless-N card and I did try switch off the wi-fi before booting my laptop. It doesn't seem to work same problem occur.
Here is my Studio 15 specifications:
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T8100 (2.1GHz/800Mhz FSB/3MB cache)
Genuine Windows® Vista Home Premium Edition SP1
Hi Resolution/Bright, glossy widescreen 15.4 WLED display (1440x900)
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
320GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450
8X Slot Load CD / DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
Dell 1510 wireless-N card
Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module (2.0)
6 Cell Battery
Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™ Advanced HD Software Edition -
I am experiencing the exact same problem on my Studio 15. It has 32 bit windows vista...
The wifi slider trick also does not work for me.
I can still eject DVDs by right clicking on the drive in "My COmputer" and change the volume, etc all through the OS interface, just the buttons won't do it themselves. -
If your touch buttons are not working there's a workaround to discharge the capacitors. just turn off your laptop and take out the battery. then press the power button for 30-40secs, that'd do it.
I've been having this problem, that my laptop stays in the DELL BIOS for about 3-5mins, and then continues. It's really annoying to wait that long to start loading Vista.
I chatted for about 1 and half hour with Dell Tech Support, and I think I'll send my Studio to repair, maybe changing the motherboard, and the touch panel should correct my problems.... (and maybe get a new board with eSATA!!!)....
Well, it's been a long post, but I had to let it all out... heheh... -
I just had the same problem with my studio today. I turned it on the eject light stayed lit up and none of the other touch buttons worked so I rebooted and it did it again.
So I restarted went into my bios and changed my boot time to from Quick Boot to Through Boot and now its off, so I hope this fixes the problem I will post back if it doesnt.
I really hope that its no big deal also my WiFi catcher is broke I think it only blinks 3 time then goes out no matter where I am with or without WiFi connection -
The same thing happened to me. I have only had my laptop for like 4 days and the issue happened when I first turned it on. I contacted dell support and they told me that this is how the system was designed and that the eject button is supposed to stay lit and supposed to run on its own. Has anyone else heard this? If not does anyone know a soulution. Mine stays lit and sounds like it is ejecting something even when nothing is in it, when I turn it on until my computer finishes booting up.
-
I have this issue with my studio 15 the first day I got it. I contacted dell and they wouldn't do anything about it. I think is a lame excuse saying this is working as intended because if it is then everytime the system reboot the eject button should stay lit. Also, the funny thing is the lit turn off after the cd rom finish eject wutever it is in the drive.
-
Have you gotten any information for fixing the problem? I have contacted dell twice and whateverthey did did not fix the problem.
-
-
Oh, yes, it works, of course yes. God bless DELL and their exceptional customer support for this BIOS update. The strange behavior is gone. Now the Slot DVD drive on my 5 days old 1800$ laptop is not ejecting at all
I`ll not even mention the "F" and "K" keys on the keyboard, that pop up every time I press them -
Oh man, how do they expect to gain another customer with all these problematic issues? I am currently considering in buying a Dell Studio 15, maybe I will withdraw that decision... :/
-
Dont get it wrong, besides this the laptop is a real bargin, especially considering the price tag. If you get a good one, without the keyboard issue, and considering the DVD eject problem to be BIOS-related, the studio 15 is a good deal (after potential new BIOS version being released by dell)
-
Heh, people here is really scaring me off at times.
Sorry for being off topic, but what are you getting for your battery life by the way? -
Well, I got the 6 cell battery, because I didnt want to wait 14 days or so for the 9 cell one. Its hard to say how long does it last, but I can say it may be capable of something like 2h30minutes or so of medium load, e.g 30-40% CPU Load, no DVD/CD active, no bluetooth, probably some WiFi, but not all the time
-
Any idea when the new potential bios gonna be out that will fix this cd-dvd eject problem?
-
Dell tried doing something to my laptop when I contacted support. They like updated the software or updated drivers of something and that didn't work.
-
Funny, two of the reasons I was considering this notebook- the "cool" media buttons and the slot load DVD.
Then there are the nasty shipping delays, and the regretable knowledge that this new model will probably be 25% cheaper in two months.
Sony won me over in the end. -
I HAVE THE FIX!!! I talked with Dell Tech Support ealier today and had much better luck than others seemed too... I had the exact same problem many described: the eject button stayed on and the media direct touch buttons stopped working. Here's the fix... Turn your computer off, unplug it, turn it over and remove the battery. Underneath the battery, there are two small philip's head screws. Remove these screws and turn the computer back over. Open your laptop as wide as possible and now you can pop out the panel that the touch buttons are on. It takes a little wiggling, but pop it off from one side and then wiggle it to completely remove it. The panel is attached to the computer though a thin white strip that connects into a little "chip" on the underside of the panel. The tech told me to remove it, but I never could get it out. I jiggled it around some though, replaced the panel, put the screws and battery back in, fired up my beloved computer and now she works perfectly!!! It didn't take any BIOS upgrades or anything else - just some cable wiggling!
Hopefully this works for y'all too. Good luck!
-
I tried what Zoo92 did but only went as far as removing the batteries. Then with the batteries out I pressed the power button for like 40secs. After restarting everything works great now.
-
I have the same eject light issue with a replacement studio 15 Dell sent (bc the other one had fan issues.) I did what Zoo92 did and actually removed the wire that connects the media panel to the motherboard. I took out both the end that connects to the panel and the one that connected to the motherboard. Fixes the problem for a few boots and it comes right back... Now back to where I started...eject light on...
-
argh this problem is annoying. wish dell would get their act together and fix this problem.

This used to happen to me, except the media buttons didn't work anymore, the eject button just stayed lit up. To fix it, I opened it up, disconnected the connector to the media panel and the mainboard, and put it back in. It's really easy on the studio, since the black panel that you're supposed to squeeze the connector into flips up, so you just flip it up, put the connector there, then flip it down. Since then, I've never had this happen. (3 weeks)
-
I took out the wire and reseated both ends. Problem still exists. Going to see if I can reconnect the DVD drive and seeing if that will help.
-
Subscribed. My Studio 1537 with the latest BIOS update does this and it is annoying.
-
Same here, though mine is Studio 17. Also have tried reseating the internal media control cable but problem still exist.
-
I found that after 5-10 minutes, the buttons start to work again. This definitely appears to be a BIOS/hardware issue and not related to the OS or drivers.
-
I got my motherboard replaced and also the touch buttons panel. The problem persists...
. BIOS A06 doesn't fix this, it's really annoying.
Now the volume up lit up, I can't use any other buttons, and this goes for like 5mins. After this, the panel works... -
-
My studio 1537 exhibits this wierd behaviour, but the eject button only stays lit for around 1-1/2 minutes after windows is loaded, so by the time I have finished checking my mail and other routine tasks, the light has gone off and media control panel functions return. but if it gets any worse, I'll give Dell a call.
-
have you given my link a try? (post #29) -
I don't have any USB devices attached to the 1537 (in reference to dee's thread).
-
I have been working and searching sites for two days to remedy this.
I found a program where you can assign a hotkey to perform the eject button.
You can also put a shortcut button on the taskbar to eject the cd.
And it's free
http://www.cd-eject-tool.com/ -
dee, I too do not have any usb devices attached. Tonight when I turned the little fella on the volume up light came on for a while there (mabye a minute, then the eject light (30 seconds) then behaviour returned to normal.
Could be disastrous if I am using the laptop with a radio for PSK31 - full volume would be amplified several times more than it should, overdriving the radios output, and more than likely blowing the back end of the transciever out. So I will probably end up using a seperate pci-express sound card to use with the radios.
Also if a moderator spots this, I couldn't find a way to change my user name. I will contact a moderator about closing down "dash8brj" as I was not aware I already had an account here until I automatically signed in with those credentials on my old P3 box. I'll attempt to close it myself.
edit: mod contacted - Teck - he/she should be able to remove the dash8brj account for me, as I sent the pm from that account -
oh well, it was just a theory of mine. things i've noticed that trigger the eject button. ok, so we're back to square one. -
Hello!
I was considering trying the discharge option. My eject light stays lit for about 1-3 minutes right as it shows the Vista logon screen.
Does anybody know if the discharge option will make your computer slower or break it?
Also, will the discharge option void warranty?
EnergyXP -
You won't permanently fix the problem that way. The problem appears to be with the electronics associated with the media buttons and is independent of the OS. I suspect Dell could fix it with a new BIOS firmware release.
-
I currently have the A05 BIOS, should I upgrade to A06 to see what happens?
Will upgrading the BIOS cause my laptop harm in anyway? (dumb question)
Thanks!

BIOS update won't solve this problem. It's a factory/design problem. The wireless antenna cables that come from the display interfere with the touch panel, there's a problem in the hardware.
I'll ask Dell for a replacement, since I got replaced: motherboard, dvd drive, touch panel and palm rest, the problem persists. -
Im using BIOS A06. Problem remains. Updating the BIOS wont hurt the system if you do it properly (i.e. let it finish the BIOS update and restart on its own dont unplug the thing while it's performing the update or something like that.)

i am also facing the same problem from the time i bought the laptop. on my first complaint they changed the dvd drive but the problem still continued and today they have changed the hinge. at present the light is not glowing ,lets see that it glows after a few startups or not. i just want to ask that can dell replace my laptop if this problem persists??

I too am having this problem.
Another problem, besides the stickiness, is the light will sometimes stay lit, and it will keep making the eject noise. It's come to the point where I absolutely despise hearing that tiny one second noise. It gives me a head ache if I hear it more than two or three times.
I need to keep tapping it or rubbing it until it stops. -
Hi
So I talked with Dell support, and they basically said the same things here, in order from first to last:
1. He said first to try the discharge option.
2. He then said to go into the BIOS then change the boot option from minimal to "thorough"
3. If all else fails, he said to remove the battery/remove the two phillips screws/ and pop out the panel, and etc. (there was a description on the first page of this forum post).
I already tried the discharge option, it worked on one boot. But it happened again after one boot. So now I am going to try the BIOS option. My last resort is to open up the lappy, so that will wait.

I have observed that my 1537 often exhibits this problem on a cold boot in the morning.
-
hey guys i also faced the dvd drives light glowing problem but after changing the hinge it has got solved . its been 5 days now and the light has not glown from the day the hinge got changed.
