I got my studio 15 a couple of days ago, very nice computer, performs excellently for what I expected it to. One question though is about the sounds its making. Two in particular.

Firstly, the dvd drive is SOOO loud. Not only when inserting a dvd into the drive but also when reading it. Not deafeningly loud, but louder than my desktop's dvd drive, and thats over 5 years old now. Also, when I noticed a friend's xps 1530, his made little to no sound when inserting, reading, ejecting, etc. Is this normal or is there something wrong? As far as I can tell, the disks aren't getting scratched.

Secondly, there seems to be a constant ticking sound coming from what seems to be below the right palmrest. Now, I assume this is a moving component sound, but I just want to make sure. This isn't particularly loud, but the ticking seems to never stop, slow, or speed up. So I'm wondering what this is. Could it be my HDD?

Sorry for the noobish questions, haven't bought a laptop in 4 years, and my old one was quite noisy, but its what I expected back then. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am sorry but responses such as these let Dell get away with poor quality. I have a slot loading Wii and a car player and can vouch with 100% certainty that the they make no where close to the sound Dell's DVD drive makes...not even close......its like a day and night difference

I have had 2 Studio 17's with slot dvd drives. Both were fine. Seems like you got a bad drive... it happens. Contact Dell.

Well, as it turns out, I actually did complain and Dell promptly replaced with another equally noisy drive. Have you seen a Wii's slot drive? Its smooth as a butter....I say again, day and night difference !!!
