If I remember right, the 14z doesn't come with an optical drive? If so, take that into consideration aswell =P

From the looks of it right now, it seems like theres only an optional external optical drive.

"System does not come with a DVD or CD Drive. The external drive below is needed to access DVD or CD media. Drive may be required for OS recovery."

For now, the performance improvement of DDR3 over DDR2 is minimal. Overall, the two studios are very similar in performance, but the Studio 15 has a more powerful video card.

DDR3 matters A LOT when using an integrated card like 9400M. In comparison to DDR2, when using the DDR3, there's a performance boost in video of about 33%. Is that "minimal"? That's huge, I'd say.

If OP cares about performance so much, will they really be wanting an integrated card?

Sure, with integrated card, you are expecting a performance boost by improving RAM speed ? I would think you will go for dedicated graphics. There are tests that have shown that DDR2 and DDR3 show no performance difference. It might take quite some time for DDR3 to be quite faster and then you will have USB 3.0 too and all. Moreover with DDR2 you will have cheaper upgrades in future.

I think there are other bottlenecks in the system that are critical to have good performance, just evaluating a laptop because it has DDR3 and others have DDR2 would be wrong and misguided. So look at the holistic picture.

Only thing is that Studio 14 doesnt have 1080p or any screen closer to that, and also it doesnt have disk drive, thats what is critical for some, who want to carry around laptop, why would you want to carry another external optical drive, that would be irritating.

Cool, i guess the dell studio 14 is being sold in india .. http://configure.ap.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=in&cs=indhs1&kc=&l=en&oc=S540806IN8&s=dhs . I dont know what is the difference between 14z and 14, why bring a 14z ? i guess 14 has internal optical drive too, thats right and also a decent 720p/900p LED backlit display, thats cool.

    That's correct. The Studio 14 does, the 14z doesn't (It should, but doesn't :)).
