    Hello

I just received my studio 15 and I'm very happy with it, the laptop is almost perfect, except for this problem with HDMI, it doesn't have audio!!! Does anyone knows how to solve this, or at least use the HDMI video and get the audio in any other way? (dont know if that can be done)

    Thanks.

you likely got your studio 15 with the IGP (Intel X3100 GMA)
as far as i know....you don't get sound over HDMI with it.

If you have a studio 15 with with discrete gpu (radeon hd 3450) you can do the following:

if you can't get it to work with hdmi.....you can run a converter cord from the headphone jack (3.5mm to rca) and plug the two audio jacks into the tv for sound

Graphite gray with blue U trim. I thought on changing it black, but luckily i didn't hahaha, the blue trim is very nice :D

thanks rezendevous, I got mine with the radeon hd 3450, and just tried what you told me but it didn't work. It seems as if the there is sound but very low, although the volume is at 100%

There is 5.1 sound over HDMI. I've posted the solution to this.

Thanks, I solved that problem a few days ago and it worked well, but I tried it again yesterday and now it doesn't have audio AND video. I have no idea what could have happened, so I wrote to Dell to see if they know what to do.
If you have any ideas they'll be welcome

I have a similar problem. I SOMETIMES have sound, but mostly don't. If I switch channels on the tv set and return to the laptop-hdmi input I lose the sound until I shut down the laptop and turn it on again. (50% chance). Also it seems to be important if I put in the HDMI-cable into the laptop after of before choosing the right channel of even turning on the tv. I still haven't figured out what the problem is.
When I open the playback devices HDMI-output is enabled and default. Sometimes it's even outputting sound, but you still hear nothing on the TV :(

I read in a review that the studio doesn't support Audio over HDMI. It also stated most budget laptops do not support audio over HDMI anyway.

The XPS does it beautifully and I am pretty sure the review was wrong (they had only tried with IGP). If you have the Radeon graphics card it should work but you need to set windows to use HDMI as the Audio output, this is due to Windows and not a problem with the hardware supplied by Dell.

Tried that, but it doesn't seem to make any difference :(
Tried to disable, enable, stop and start services etc etc.

Which video card do you have? With the hd 3450 you have to set the sound to HDMI, in sound properties. Also try FN+F8 a couple of times, that did the trick for me.

There's a solution in another HDMI thread on this forum. Use search function and search for my posts.

    You mean this solution?
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=284102

I tried that, but as there are a million settings in AC3filter I might have something else wrong.

I also found that the PLAYER is important in the equation too.
In VLC Player I can check 2.0 or 5.1 and I get sound, but if I check 'sound over spdif' it DOESN'T work.
In Mediaplayer Classic Homecinema edition I get no sound at all
