Hi there, I am completely ticked off with my computer and if I don't figure out the solution soon, I am going to throw it at the wall. Seriously help me please...I would SO appreciate it.
It is only 5 weeks old and has never had anything wrong with it at all, until I noticed 2 days ago when I shut the lid like I always do (it was on balanced power saving, set to hybernate when I shut the lid) and heard the *ping ping* of it starting back up. I opened the lid and saw that it had shutdown and restarted, and when I logged in, it said Windows has recovered from a serious error..etc etc. It was the first time this had happened, and I hadn't even done anything out of the ordinary. I then noticed that when I shut my lid the next day, it crashed and restarted itself, saying the same error thing again. It did it like 5 times yesterday (I close my lid a lot to transport it from room to room or just when I am not using it) and it did it each time! I ran numerous virus scans (superantispyware, windows, and avg) and they found nothing. I am having no other problems with performance either, and haven't installed anything new except normal windows updates.

Today I checked hardware for errors, and it said everything was fine. I checked windows for solutions, and there are none. I then decided to change the settings of the power saving mode, and changed it to Do Nothing when I shut the lid, thinking that I would fix the problem. When I shut the lid and reopened it, the screen was just black, but the power was still on. I clicked the keypad a lot, and then pressed the power button a few times, and it remained black and unresponsive. I ended up having to manually hold down the start button to turn it off.

What is going on?! I am seriously going crazy with this, because I can't understand why my computer is crashing!

    Here are my details:
    Vista Home Premium 64 bit
    6.0 Service Pack 1
    Intel Core Duo 2
    4.00 GB memory
    3.96 physical memory
    2.28 available physical memory
    8.09 total virtual memory
    6.04 available virtual memory

The only things I have used this computer for in the past 5 days is facebook and watching a tv show on Hulu. THAT'S IT! Please help...PLEASE

To rule out a software issue, I'd say reformat your computer. When you changed the setting of the lid, closed it and re-opened it the screen was black.. Mine did this and all I had to do was close it and re-open it, and it worked.

Not many suggestions but I would say if it continues to happen, just reformat your computer.

Go to control panel > administrative tools > event viewer and have a look through the various logs to see if there are any warning or critical messages around the same time as the last crash.

Also, check for program / windows updates that happened just before the first time it happened. If possible back up your system and then use system restore to go back to the point just before the first crash happened to see if it happens again.

I had the same problem. Crashed when I closed the lid, uplugged the mouse, or looked at the computer the wrong way. I spent about two hours on Dell Chat and on the phone. They were zero help. I couldn't understand "Mary Beth" at all. :)

I had Windows send the error report on my crash and received a message to check out this KB:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/KB973879

I uninstalled the update in two places and it seems to have solved problem. Apparently, this update had some major flaws and causes Dual Core systems to halt.

My laptop has been giving me the same problems for the past few days. Hokie74, if I go on that link that you provided and uninstall the program, will that take away the problem? thank you!
