I've browsed around the forums but I was unable to find a definite answer. (I have the HD Audio 2.0)

How would I connect my studio 15 to these 5.1 speakers (x-540) so that sound would come out from all of the speakers including the subwoofer?

I've heard that I need to connect each of the three inputs to the two headphone jacks and the microphone jack (which can be switched)....is this true?

Does anyone know if the matrix mode (which supposedly converts 2.1 sources to virtual 5.1 sources) will work if I only plug in one input rather than the three "required inputs?"

Do I need anything else in terms of hardware of software? (please only things that are available in Canada)

    thanks in advance

If you connect only the green cable, and then use matrix mode, you will get sound from all speakers.

Also, it is possible that the inputs could switch, I just can't confirm it on a laptop. I know on some computers that only have 3 sound jacks they switch so that you can connect a 5.1 system.

It can be done without matrix mode (which is totally fake 5.1 surround):

Put the black cable into the microphone jack, orange into the jack next to that and the green one into the furthest right jack.
Then open up the IDT Audio Control Panel (Control Panel -> Additional Options -> IDT Audio Control Panel) and in the far right panel (Jacks), click the far right jack picture and it should come up with a drop down selection. Select 'Device: Front Speakers' and the rest should also change.

There we go, proper 5.1 surround sound. Enjoy!
