I had been under the impression that I wanted / needed 4GB ram in my Studio1535, but now I am thinking of just getting a machine with 3GB ram and upgrading if need be.

I assume it will have 2 slots , 1 2GB chip and 1 1GB chip. will it be easy for me to swap out the 1gb chip with a 2gb chip that I will buy elsewhere? Is it located at the bottom of the machine or are they both onboard?

    Thanks!

If you won't be doing anything extensive on it then 3GB should be fine for you.
If you want 4GB anyway which many people do then you could just replace the 1GB Stick with a 2GB. However the ram won't work in dual channel unless both sticks are the exact same brand and capacity.
The only downside to that is you'll feel like your wasting memory replacing a 2GB stick with another 2GB stick ya know?

Do you think you'll need the extra ram?

hmm, im not really sure whether ill need the extra ram or not... ill mostly be graphics/music/video editing/production, no gaming really..

so, if i understand you correctly, the 3gb can't work in dual channel either? is that a reason alone to go for 4gb?

3GB will probably be sufficent for you. What kind of editing and production though?

No, 3GB isnt Dual CHannel. Though, it doesnt provide any large performance increase.

To play it safe, you could go with 4GB, but you will also need to purchse a 64-bit OS to use it. ;)

    Typo: 64Bit
Yes you should get a 64bit OS in case you do get 4GB sometime.

All Vista licenses are for both 32bit and 64bit so you don't have to rebuy 64bit under any circumstances...

Also, the RAM needs to be the same capacity and speeds, but brand is not important for Dual Channel support (though it isn't recommended to mix RAM in any case).

If you only have a 32bit disk, then you do need to buy a 64-bit disk...

The licenses are the same, but the disks arent. And last i cheecked you cant just get an OS disk w/o a licence.

    I have Studio 15 with 3 GB in DUAL ( 2 GB Kingston + 1 GB Samsung)
Kingston must be universal ram because I know HP ram + Kingston Ram is good and possible combination too.
