I'm pretty sure the only wireless cards offered on the 1535 were the Dell 1397-G and Dell 1510-N. I upgraded my own Studio 15 from the 1397-G to the 1510-N, which I got for $39 as a 'Refurb' from Dell. A new 1510-N runs $79!

I have a friend who has a 1535 and the 1397-G and wants to upgrade. Unfortunately, Dell only has the $79 NEW part at the moment. Would the Intel 4965AGN also work in it, since it has the PM965 chipset?

    Thanks!

Rather than 4965AGN, go straight for 5300AGN. It cost no more than 40 bucks on ebay, shipment included to almost every country.

And don't forget that Studio 15 uses half size mini-pci express card, so be sure it's the correct size when buying.

Yeah, Dell doesn't lock down their BIOS to accept only certain mini-PCIe cards, so you should be able to use anything. I'm pretty sure quite a few people have upgraded their 965-based laptops to 5x00 wireless cards. That being said, half-height versions of the 4965, 5100, and 5300 are all unreasonably hard to find; the reason being that I think only Dell uses these half-height cards. They still aren't expensive when you can find them, though.

I just assumed since the Intel 5100/5300 were introduced with the GM45/PM45 chipset (and Centrino 2) that they wouldn't work with the 965 chipset...but they will? That's good news.

So most other notebooks with the Intel wireless cards use the regular-height version, but Dell uses is one of the few who uses the half-height? Of course, Dell has the 4965, 5100 and 5300 availalble for purchase...if you're willing to pay their exorbitant prices, that is.

I've noticed that Dell likes to have a monopoly on whatever they can, no matter how small it may seem...

I personally have installed an Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN card inside my Dell Mini 9 and it works like a charm. It has 945 chipset, which is older generation compared to 965.

So... Installing 5100/5300 in 965 should be okay.
