Just got a refurb Studio 1537 with a P8600. Using Core Temp, it idles around 50-55 C, and when if it gets to 60 the fan comes on to knock it down to around 45ish, and then it climbs back up.
Should I be using a diff temperature monitor, and also, are those temps high?

Try HWMonitor or the CPU temperature monitor in RMClock.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
If you have a discrete GPU, those temps (assuming they're correct; do double check as Shroom suggests) are probably more or less normal. If you have an integrated GPU and your ambient temperature isn't particularly high, those temps are a little high. Still probably nothing to worry in either case, but you might want to try cleaning your vents, etc.

T5750 idle around in 45

My p8600 is about 34C, that's with the hd3450 gpu which is about 52C

the temps are a bit high for an integrated gpu. I suggest you check the vents and give it a clean if needed.

I'm living in Thailand at the moment so the room temperature is never below 30C so maybe that has something to do with it!

My T9500 idles around 38 Celsius, although it's a slightly cooler 45nm Penryn core. This is with the ATi 3450 graphics chip. It's slightly undervolted, and I have Arctic Silver 5 applied. 41C is not a bad idle temperature though, especially with stock Dell heat pads. And 58C max is fantastic.

I have T5750 - around 45 - it is 65 technology and it is normal.
Ati Radeon 3450 - 53-56 (winter - 48-53)
HDD - very interesting. Winter and spring - 31-33.It was all 4 months.
But now It idle in 36-37 - I don't know because the summer - the environment temperatures are up with +5-6 C, or because I too much traveled with him the laptop and It is some type of HDD damage.
I don't have time to check the HDD in details.
Everything other OK.
Oh I use Everest, but I8kfanGUI will give you the same info (except GPU - somehow it reads it not good)
Check your fans heatsink It really can collects dust.

I forgot to mention that my laptop is an ASUS, not Dell, but my last laptop (Inspiron 6400) was a Dell and it ran fairly hot. I know the 'P' class mobile Core 2 Duo chips are nice and cool by default, relatively speaking...
Cheers,

I have never touched anything inside yet, too scared to as it's quite new
the readings were with HWMonitor.
Also, i'm from scotland and it's been cold and raining alot recently, don't know if that makes a difference or not. -
It shouldn't be that high. I have 2 studio 15 1537's 1 with a P8400 and 1 with a P8600.
Idle temps are usually 33 - 35. The P8600 is usually a couple of degrees higher. I t never really reaches 50dC even when stressed, both of them usually sit in the 40s when working and they both have ATI 3450(?) cards.
// Whats your CPU doing it idle? When i first got mine some programs in the background were causing the CPU to run at 5-10% with the odd spike. I killed them as they weren't needed and now it sits at 00 - 03 most of the time.
