Battery or charger connected, laptop won't boot. Only light that comes on is from the led next to the power port. It comes on for a few seconds then turns off when normally it should stay on whenever it's charging.

What is this problem indicative of? Could this be a problem with the motherboard, requiring it to be replaced?

Ok apparently one of the wires to the power button is disconnected so before I try to replace that, can someone with a similar laptop plug it in a charger and see if the light above the power port turns off if a) the battery is full or b) does it turn off with no battery but just the charger plugged in?

Yes. My 1537's charge light goes off when the battery gets up to ~95% charge. It does come on for a second or two if I plug it in on a near-full or full charge, like if I move power sockets in my house. I think that's perfectly normal. It also doesn't come on when I'm running on AC with the battery removed (I just pulled the battery to check for you).

It's just to indicate battery charging at below 95% or so as far as I can tell.

Did you get your laptop working again and/or get the power wire reconnected?

Possible workaround if your powerbutton's wire is bust: Use the MediaDirect button on the touch panel as the power button. Of course, this assumes that you don't have media direct installed because in that case, it boots straight to Windows.
