Studio 1555 P8700 have centrino2?

Hi, I am pretty much a computer newbie, but i do know that a centrino2 technology is a necessary thingy for laptop
Anyways, i recently purchased studio 1555 with the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53ghz
4gb ram
512 radeon HD4570
250gb harddrive with 7200rpm
vista home premium 64 bit

Anyways, as you guys know, when computers are purchased, it comes with those.. stickers? that indicate the operating system, processor and graphic card.
Mine came with windows vista sticker and Core 2 Duo Inside sticker, and not centrino 2 duo sticker ><... does my processor have centrino2 duo technology? I asked the dell online chat guys... they said yes, but they were wrong about so many other things that I don't really trust them..

Also, are there any way to tell whether or not mine is centrino2 processor and whether my hard drive is a 7200rpm instead of 5400? thanks

 

Google for a utility named CPU-Z. Run the utility and post a screenshot in here

 

I don't think that's the problem. You most likely don't have an Intel wireless card, which is required to make your machine a "Centrino" machine. Else, Dell made a mistake... Centrino refers to an entire platform, an Intel C2D, mainstream chipset, and wireless card, not just the processor.

You can check the hard drive with HDTune. Look up the model of your hard drive on Google (HDTune will tell it to you), and you can most likely find out if it's a 5400RPM or 7200RPM drive. Most likely they gave you all the right parts, though.

i wasnt sure if i was suppose to take ss of all parts, so i just took 3 things that i thought would be important the core speed constantly changes between 2526MHz to 1596MHz..

but i hope its a centrino2 ><

The P8700 is definitely a Centrino-compatible processor, but Centrino is a platform, not a processor. To be considered a Centrino platform, your notebook must have a compatible Core 2 Duo Merom (65nm) processor, 965 chipset, and Intel WiFi Link 4xxx series wireless card.

If you have a Dell/Broadcom wireless card, then that's why your system is not a Centrino platform.

Centrino 2 is mostly the same idea, but requires some newer stuff, i.e. Core 2 Duo Penryn (45nm) processor, 45 chipset, and Intel WiFi Link 5xxx series card.

The Studio 1555 has the PM45 chipset, and you have the P8700 processor, which is a 45nm model, so your machine would fit the Centrino 2 specification if you had an Intel 5100, 5300, or 5350 wireless card.

 

Ok, how do i find out what wireless card I have. According to the order infomration, I am suppose to have Dell 1510 Wireless-N Card

 

Then that's what you have. The Dell 1510 card is manufactured by Broadcom. In order for your system to be Centrino 2, you would have to buy an Intel 5100, 5300 or 5350 and install it yourself.

Or, if it really bothers you that much, order a Centrino 2 sticker from eBay, they're like 99 cents.

 

Oh lol.. um.. but will i have that energy efficiency and other things in my laptop still? its just the good wireless that will be gone and other things stay?

 

Short answer, yes. A P8700 is a P8700 regardless of whether or not it's in a Centrino 2 capable machine.

 

so, if i replace my wireless adaptor with intel5100, it will become centrino2? or do i have to like.. do some other isntallation ?

 

It's as simple as that. Install the WiFi 5100 card, and you will have yourself a complete Centrino 2 platform notebook.

Of course, you'll probably want that pretty little sticker too. Like I say, you can find those on eBay pretty cheap.

 

LOL same question, my Studio 1555.. P8600 (Are the t series not centrino 2?).. just install the INtel 5100/5300 and it'll be all set to be "Centrino 2"

Some T-series processors are Centrino 2-compliant, others are not. My T9500 is a Centrino 2 processor. My former T5750 was not.

The Merom processor series (65nm process) are Centrino processors. The Penryn series (45nm) are Centrino 2.

And yes, if you get an Intel WiFi Link 5100 or 5300 card, then your system will be a complete Centrino 2 platform. And yes, it's pretty much nothing more than a name for that particular combination of chipset, processor, and wireless.

 

Yeah I always thought it was just the processor too. No wonder they didn't label this centrino..

What' the difference between 5100 and 5300?

 

5100 will do 150 Mbps max and the 5300 will do 300 Mbps using draft-N if I remember rightly.
Centrino is just a marketing term - don't loose any sleep over it.

I'm still uneasy about buying from ebay. Are they usually knockoffs?

 

The 5100 has two antenna cable hookups, the 5300 has three.

I bought my Intel 5300 and Dell 370 Bluetooth cards from eBay, and they're the real deal. Knockoffs aren't really common for stuff like that.

 

If you can count the number of internet subscriber here across Japan...

 

About point 1: Wireless is not just used for accessing the internet; it could also be you are connecting to your home network. For example, I'd never get anywhere near those speeds in terms of downloading from the internet, but when copying files to my home server I am not restricted by the internet connection as my router is plugged directly into my home server.

About point 2: These are quite specialist searches you will be doing. Typically knockoffs on eBay are going to be for things lots of people search for, such as SD cards (which I'd never recommend buying from eBay).

 

Haha im so relieved that basically the centrino2 thingy is nothing.. it's the harddrives.. I didn't really need the good wireless connection anyways ..
I thought if i dont ahve the wireless adapter, then i dont get things like energy efficiency, performance, and all those other stuff centrino2 promises

What do you mean by 'it's the harddrives'? Neither Centrino nor Centrino 2 includes harddrive as requirement.

 

Centrino 2 is the name given to a collection of components that are associated with battery friendly mobile computing. These products are CPU, Chipset & Wireless. Nothing about a HDD.

It does means something, but if you've got pieces of the puzzle then you stilll benefit.
