My Idle temp seems to be within the range of:

    27C-43C for CPU
    44C-51C for GPU

These are temps when I'm not even doing anything. The fan activates when the GPU hits 51C and stops when the GPU temp reaches 44C. The CPU doesn't seem to be a factor in activating the fan.

Use I8Kfangui to see your CPU and GPU temps. Just don't click on AUtomatic Fan Control because that will severely lag your system until you turn it off. http://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html

What do you use to test this again? I know it's been posted a billion times, but I don't want to dig through that thread.

Your CPU I think just isn't getting hot enough to turn on the fan. I know that on the Inspiron the fan turns on when the CPU hits around 55 degrees Celsius. Try running an Orthos stress test (which stresses your CPU & RAM) and see when the fan turns on.

the thing with ORTHOS is that the temp increases so rapidly there's no way to really find when it sets the fan off. i KNOW for sure that when the GPU temp hits 51C, the fan goes off (i paid attention to the CPU temp and it varies from 39-44C when the GPU is at 51C). and at 44C GPU temp, teh fan turns off.

It does increase quite rapidly up to a point, but for me it slows down the temp increase at around 50C and then gradually climbs from there. GPU temp did not increase massively when running the test.

Out of curiosity, which OS are you using?

I'm using Vista Home Premium 32bit. I had Dell send me a copy of Vista 64bit since I thought maybe it's a software issure triggering the GPU temp, but even in BIOS it'll activate the fan. Even with the lid closed.
