    Hi,

The feature in Windows 7 that allows you to tell the laptop to stop charging the battery when it's plugged-in and has reached 100% is very cool (and greatly helps prolong the battery's life).

However, is there a way to make Windows 7 do this automatically each time? Or do you have to manually check the box each time I use my laptop?

    Thanks

Im not sure what setting your talking about but as far as I know once the battery hits a 100% it stops charging (but does a trickle charge to keep it at 100%)
But I think that is controlled by the motherboards chipset and BIOS.

Unfortunately I don't have the laptop yet, but I believe you had to right-click at the bottom-right of the taskbar, and there there should be a power option thing that you can select through that. I'm sorry I don't know more!

Thats OK mate, no need to apologise. when I get home from work I will check and report back.

You say that it will "greatly prolong battery life" - is there empirical evidence to support this and if so do you know by how much it prolongs the battery?

I remember reading a thread about it about a week ago. Can't remember which thread and where though! From what I can recall, if you selected this option, it prevented the laptop from doing anything to the battery once it was fully charged. I'll have a search now and see if I can find the thread I'm talking about.

    EDIT:

Found what I was talking about! It wasn't a thread in the end, it was a youtube video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CO_Omck0yg

I think basically it disables battery charging, the guy who posted the video says:

Power is constantly flowing through the battery to keep it at 100% this way is you were to do it at say 90% it will not charge past that because no power is flowing through the battery.

Thats probably one of the most ridiculous "hints" that I've ever seen. I'm just going to copy pasta what I commented on the video:

"... Totally unnecessary. This is to keep the battery from charging when you're using a low-power outlet. Such as on an airplane (notice the big airplane in the dialog box?) or when using a DC/AC converter in your car.

If the battery continued to charge after it was "full", it would over heat and be ruined.

Do you really think that computer manufacturers would design their computers to over-charge their batteries? Give your head a shake boy!!"

So in short, don't waste your time!!
