I'm getting a Studio 1555 with the t4200 Penryn Pentium Dual Core CPU. Would a P8600 Core 2 Duo work if I put it in the socket? It seems to be exactly the same core, just faster FSB and multiplier. My guess is Dell use the same motherboard for all 1555 laptops. Has anyone tried this?
Thanks
Luke

I haven't tried it myself, but the swap should work. They use the same socket, and the motherboard is universal. You might want to apply thermal paste if you do decide to swap, though.

Yeah, I was wondering whether Dell might lock the bios to one processor type, but maybe the are not that devious.

They're too lazy. =p
They'd have to make separate BIOSes for every single computer with a different processor that they sell. Although now that you mention it, you should update to the latest BIOS if you haven't yet.
It was pretty easy when I swapped my 1535's T5750 (2.0GHz/667MHz FSB/2MB L2 cache) to my current T9500 (2.6GHz/800MHz FSB/6MB L2 cache), which was never even offered as an upgrade option on the Studio 1535. It was pretty much plug and play. -
Shrooms did you notice any difference in games with the new processor, like more framerate?
-
Only in games that rely heavily on CPU power, like strategy games. Dawn of War definitely benefits from the extra 600MHz. Some Source engine games, like Left 4 Dead or TF2, also got something out of it.
The majority of games, though, are more reliant on the graphics card, e.g. I noticed no difference in Call of Duty 4. -
Quick question which didn't occur to me before; do Dell use the ball or pin processor package in these laptops? I'm guessing they are pins, no?

The processors have pins, yes.
