    Hey all,

Wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar...

I got a studio 1555 about a month ago and for the most part it works great. However....

Occasionally the computer stops responding - i.e. I'll be browsing the internet in Safari/Firefox and all of a sudden it will hang - I have to go to task manager to quit out of it. When I go back to open Safari it wont open, nor will any other application. I can double click on them but nothing happens.

Also, when this happens, Windows Vista refuses to shut down - I have to turn the computer off manually - i.e. hold the power button down for several seconds.

Also, and perhaps this is unconnected, I've noticed that when I go to the control panel, Windows Explorer crashes the first time I access it and I have to go back to the control panel to access it again.

For info, I've only really got Safari, Firefox, Itunes, Zone Alarm and Avast! installed.

    Any suggestions on reasons/fix?

    Thanks,

    Seven

Reinstall Vista, or if you can wait another two weeks, wait for your copy of Windows 7 and make a fresh install with that.

I used to have the exact same issue on the default install of Vista; Explorer would crash when opening the Control Panel, and programs would crash and fail to reopen. A fresh hard drive format and reinstall of Vista, and everything's been fine and dandy for several months.

Hey 'Shroom (or any other kind types :) )

Was just wondering - the only copy of Vista I have is the recovery disc that came with the laptop. Can I use this to do a clean install or can i just use the system restore options on the recovery CD? I guess though that using the system restore options would just restore Vista to when the problem first occurred...?

    Thanks.

Typically the media containing the OS for Dell machines is actually the full version of the OS without any bloatware etc, so you should be able to use the disc to perform a clean install.

However, this may be different if, say you bought your notebook from somewhere other than Dell directly. It might still be the same, but I seem to remember when I bough a Dell from PC World (a computer retail outlet in the UK) that the media provided was simply just a disk image of the original configuration.

    Hey Fragile,

Yes, I bought it direct from Dell. The disc I have is purple (if that helps!!) and has re-installation DVD written on it with Dell written on it. Eeeh was just trying to save a couple of hours+ time setting it all up again! Ah well.... thanks :)

Yup, that's original installation media for your windows OS - with it you should be able to clean install.

Vista is pure crap! I have been running 7 since April of this year and almost 0 problems, the same programs I use on 7 and then try to install on my SDad's 1555 and Vista not only gives us warnings but in one case removed and corrupted the DVD drive driver! LOL Vista is pure crap for sure.

    Get 7 !
