I recently noticed a weird thing while switching on my studio 1555..only when the lid is open the power button actually works...when it is closed, no matter how many times u press the button it doesnt switch on(tried everything like removing battery and stuff)...
Is there any kind of hidden setting somewhere or is it a problem with the power button itself....I had the whole power button assembly replaced around 10 days back...

It's not a problem, that's just how the laptop is designed. When you're carrying it around in a bag, it would be very annoying to find out that an accidental bump had nudged the power button and your system's been on for an hour.

More than annoying, it could be quite alarming. Have you ever left a notebook powered fully up inside a bag? I joke not when I say I opened the bag and it was almost like a sauna in there.

lol..yup!!..thts happened a few times when I left my older laptop on sleep and it switched on while in the bag!!..
does ur inspiron's power also not switch on when the lid is closed...if I am not mistaken the power button on the inspiron is above the keyboard right?..so I doubt u cud switch it on when the lid's down..?

My Inspiron will definitely not switch on when the lid is closed, because the power button is inside - I couldn't press it without having the lid open ;o)

I've done it with older notebooks though, and it's pretty scary.

Both my old Studio 1535 and my current 1555 disable the power button while the lid is closed.

I can also confirm, with the Lid closed, pushing the button will do nothing. This is a good feature, for the reasons mentioned above.

My 14z won't switch on when the lid is closed either, but it doesn't just seem to be a power button thing. I have a Windows Home Server doing daily backups and the 14z is set to wake for backups, but won't wake when the lid is closed. It's fine to not switch on when on battery, but I would really like an option to switch on when on AC power. My old Inspiron would turn on, so I could leave the lid closed when not in use. Now I have to leave the 14z open all the time, collecting dust.

Just leave it slightly open, like a few inches. It won't get much dust but it should still trigger the sensor that the lid is open and thus allow power to come on.

In vista Power Options ther is an option "Choose what closing the lid does". There u can choose "Do Nothing". The system ll remain ON even when the lid is closed. Thats what i do when i keep my lap on for night downloads.
In case u want to schedule it to start up, select this option den put ur laptop to sleep nd close the lid. Should do the trick

    This :)

Although Mastershroom's method is more convenient if you do not want to always have to switch that option. Thats what I do because I often use the sleep feature when closing the lid aswell as sometimes leave it on over night to download the naughties. I just set my monitor to shut off after 10 minutes and close the lid to the point where its about to snap closed. Doesn't prevent all the dusts, but the majority will not get on there.

The problem isn't leaving it powered on when the lid is closed, but to be able to power it on when the lid is closed. Setting the lid to "do nothing" will keep it on, but once it goes into hibernate with the lid closed, it can't be turned back on until you open the lid. The power button is active and lights up, but something in the bootup sequence detects that the lid is closed and immediately shuts down.
