Hi there,
I was wondering if anyone has had problems with their Studio 1558 orders? I ordered on 23/02 and the EDD was 09/03, but it's now been put back to the 01/04!
The only custom components I requested were the FullHD WLED screen and the backlit keyboard. I have to say I'm not very impressed!

Hi Lucko,
I've ordered the same Studio 1558 on 02/03, and been given an EDD of 30/03 (exactly 4 weeks). I believe they're probably just covering themselves in this case. I've not customised mine at all, so hoping I can shave some time off that estimated date; a lot of people on these forums (and others) seem to be experiencing this at the moment.
All in all, I was aware there could be a potential wait of a month or so, so I'm not overly upset. Still, it's not stopping me checking the Order Status page every 30 minutes...
Let me know how you get on! -
Can you post your customizations?
-
-Lucko -
Just no 'recommended' set-ups with it at the moment... they seem to change every few days though. -
Still, it would be nice to have some information on what exactly was holding the orders up.

Just as a follow up to keep others in the loop, my laptop went into production on Saturday (06/03) and has been "Shipped" (according to the order status) today (09/03), exactly a week since I ordered. That's a shipping date three weeks less than they estimated. I'm delighted so far, but let's see how long it takes to get here...
-
Good to hear the news Chris!
My laptop is currently 'in production' as of yesterday (08/03). Hopefully it'll be shipped soon! I suppose just over three-ish weeks isn't a bad turnaround time.

I originally ordered my dell 1558 on the 24th Feb with estimated delivery on or before the 10th March. Its i5-430 processor, 1080p screen and backlit keyboard.
On 6th March the revised estimated delivery date changed to 6th April! when I checked on the order status, and still in preproduction stage. AArrrgghhhh. I've called them several times before and asked if there was any problems with my order in which I got the standard response 'no problem with your order and will get it on or before the 8th March'
7th March I checked the order status and now it shows its in "production". So hopefully it gets shipped in a couple of days. Will give you an update in due course for those who are interested.
Anyone have any ideas how long this could sit in production for?
Regards,
A -
My laptop shipped earlier today! Very pleased. I hope you're not left waiting too long Parms. Hopefully it won't take too long to arrive
-
Parms, my laptop shipped 3 days after going into production, though I haven't customised it at all.
My status on the Walsh Western website updated 2 hours ago to say my scheduled delivery is this Friday, 12/03/10 AM! I missed the automated call (twice) to arrange a delivery time, so looks like it's just picked one. Delighted with this, it was only "shipped" yesterday.
If it arrives as intended, that'll be 10 days from ordering to arrival, including a trip from China. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones. -
Hi,
Are you in the UK or based elsewhere?
My status is still showing shipped on the dell website with a tracking number that shows the following info:
Date Time Location Activity
10/03/10 18:15 CHINA DEPARTED MANU.FACILITY
10/03/10 10:15 PENDING.

Thought I'd let you know my laptop arrived just before midday today, as scheduled. 10 days from order to delivery; can't fault any part of the service so far. Not had chance to check or play with the laptop yet as I'm at work, so hoping everything will be fine.
For interest, the longest my WW status remained unchanged was after it had left the manufacturing facility in China. This is my history on the site:

09/03/10 13:15 CHINA DEPARTED MANU.FACILITY
Was expecting it next week when it left China on Tuesday... 3 days from China to my front door is fairly impressive! -
Dell Studio 1558 i5, funky 'New World' lid, backlit keyboard and 1080p display. Ordered on February 18th, original "Estimated Ship Date" March 5th. On March 4th, this slipped to March 30th. My laptop went in to production on Tuesday (March 9th) and was shipped on Wednesday (March 10th). Walsh Western track & trace "came to life" about 6pm that day with the following:
10/03/10 18:15 CHINA DEPARTED MANU.FACILITY
10/03/10 10:15 PENDING.
and the following note regarding ETA:
"Your order is in transit and will be delivered within the next 4 days. A scheduled delivery date will be available on this page in the next 24 hours"
It has remained this way for nearly 80 hours now.
Why has my order come from China? I was under the impression that Dell assembled within the EU (for reasons of tax and to keep up the "just in time" fundamentals the company was founded on)?
Is it known for Syncreon/Walsh Western's tracking to just 'break'? -
It seems so WillPS. I checked google and have read a few threads where people have had to wait a few days before anything happens/until a delivery date comes up. It's just a waiting game now!
-
Lame
!
I wonder if all our orders are on the same pallet somewhere!? -
I would imagine so! If our laptops don't arrive Monday/Tuesday, I'd be rather surprised. I have heard that Dell's carriers have been known for making c**k-ups before (e.g. sending consignments to the completely wrong country!) but I'm sure we should be ok, touch wood
I am currently more concerned about the fan issues some of the 1558's appear to be having! Hopefully it's an issue that can be solved at a software level though. -
Well that would be just perfect!!
It's wrong to promise a customer something within 24 hours and then 4 days later carry the same promise. -
I was told Dell moved manufacturing for some computers from Ireland to Poland, but now most of their stuff happens in China and India. China for computer assembly and India for customer support and call centres; both of which are terriible in terms of service. Your 1558 is more likely than not to not work as well... judging by the amount of s...t about the 155x range on many online forums. I have one scheduled to come in early April, not getting my hopes up at all despite its relatively high spec.
What spec did you get anyway? and how much did it cost you all? -
I personally got the i5-430m, 4GB, HD4570, Backlit Keyboard and 1080p screen. I'm hoping it works ok but I'm not getting my hopes up! Cost me £598 in all (plus I'm getting an extra £20 from a cashback site, in theory).
It's just the fan issue that I'm worried about. Hopefully it's something that can be solved with a bios update! -
Studio 1558, i5-430m, 4gb DDR3, 500gb HDD:
+1080p display
+backlit keyboard
+'New World' Lid
+Intel 802.11n Wireless
+Dell Bluetooth
+2 Years On-site warranty
Including the Dell Student Computing Incentive (6% off) - £753
The whole reason I need this laptop is for my assignments; now I'm going home for mothers day without a computer and an Object Oriented assignment in for Wedsnesday, so I'll only be able to spend until tonight at home. Sucks majorly. -
Any luck yet guys? My order tracking still hasn't updated!
/update
Just had an automated phone call to arrange delivery! Should be between 8am-1pm tomorrow... in theory -
I was quoted 8am to 6pm and they couldnt be any more specific!!
But yeah, at least we're on the home stretch now! -

So our laptops must have been on the same flight over. Funny the power of the internet, isnt it?
-
Good news: My laptop has arrived!
Bad news: It had three dead pixels
Tried ringing Dell earlier but got tired of waiting. I'm just hoping I won't have to wait three weeks for a replacement laptop!
/update
Got through to Dell and someone will be coming around in the next few days to replace the screen -
Well that's something I guess. Still waiting here, do hope it turns up in one piece!
-
All arrived, in one piece! Now for my Windows refund!!
-
Mine arrived at 10am this morning. All seems to be working great so far. Love the LED screen!! 1080p fantastic.....
Sorry to hear about the dead pixals. Were they easy to spot?
Enjoy the laptop!
Regards,
Ajay -
Your average Joe probably wouldn't have been able to spot them, but I'm not your average Joe
Other than the screen, I'm dead chuffed with the laptop! I can play Civilization IV on it fine so that'll keep me happy
The Dell tech is supposedly coming around tomorrow to replace the screen, hope the new screen is dead-pixeless! Hope you guys enjoy your laptops!
/update
New screen installed and no dead pixels. Rejoice!
