Hi, this is my third year using this atrocious laptop. During first year, I've had heating issue like many people have on this forum. I've fixed this issue (or so I thought) by reapplying the thermal paste and buying a laptop cooler. It hasn't been shutting down since then. However, the problem seems to have come back and in worse condition. I've cleaned out heat sink fan and vent, which I found a thick layer of dust. So I assumed the problem was solved. However, the computer still shuts down with light gaming. When I check the temperature after few games, it will be around 67-70. However, if I continuously play, it WILL shut down. If I remember correctly, the laptop shut down at least over 85 first year I bought this laptop. However, it will shutdown even before reaching 75. Can someone suggest me solution to this problem?

Read a Dell community site aka
Studio 1558 fan problem - Laptop General Hardware Forum - Laptop - Dell Community

And alot of buyers have reported this is a motherboard problem and you should if warranty get a refund and or replaced motherboard that is not defective. These are you two options at this point....

Thanks for replying but unfortunately mine's long past warranty. Prior to this problem began I switched out wifi adapter to N6250 because my old mini 1501 had bad reception. Now I get great reception but shuts down whenever the system is under what I would consider slightly heavy load. I tried switching back in the old adapter but problem still continues. I just looked at motherboard and it's about it seems to be running about $150...I guess this is it for my laptop.

Edit: I just noticed my GPU constantly running at core clock of 750 MHz and Mem clock of 799.9 MHz which are the max values for HD5470 I believe. Also, according to log, last value that was recorded for temperature was 75 oC before shutting itself. Could it be GPU problem?
