    Hey everyone,

last night I spilled some water ( ) on my recently bought dell studio 17 laptop. It was mostly over the mouse finger pad and a little over the space bar. It was turned on and plugged into the wall. The screen froze an nothing worked. I unplugged it from the wall and unplugged the battery and tried to tip the water out. I left it in a tilted position overnight. It still wont turn on but when the battery goes on the white light on the side turns on.

Anyways I just wanted to get some advice on what to do. I called the Dell tech support but they were closed. If i send it in how long does that usually take and how much should i expect to pay for this type of problem?

And lastly is there any way i can get the files off the computer?

    Thanks heaps for any help.

dell has a service where they will refurbish your laptop for $200, it covers all parts except the mother board, screen, and battery. not sure if this will work for yours. Also as far as them finding out if you spilled liquid, not sure but they probably have moisture stickers inside that change color, plus there will probably be some residue on the components. You might want to take apart the cover your self and see if you can see anything and very carefully clean anything you find with an electronics cleaner. You may end up fixing the laptop your self.

oh, you should also look into your university computer store, mine is affiliated with Dell and handle all there warrantee repairs, the ones at my uni fixed mine and did a very good job.

I'm sorry this happened to you, and your lappy..but that is wrong to discuss telling Dell that your lappy won't turn on (when in fact it won't turn on because you spilled water on it). That isn't ethical, and I believe is against forum rules to discuss things like that... :(

That is something that would be covered under Complete Care coverage if it was purchased.

Perhaps there is another option then what you have stated above...

Sorry to hear about your misfortune. As for recovering your data, you could pull the drive from your laptop and input into an external enclosure or a dock. At the very least, a tech will be able to help you with this.

Unfortunately repairing a laptop is not only expensive, but lengthy as well. Depending on the damage, you could be looking at 2-3+ weeks for the repairs from when you ship it out to when you receive it back. If your motherboard is fried, you'd best for another laptop. Replacing the motherboard is just too expensive. let's just hope it's not this.

If you have a certified Dell tech in your neighborhood, it wouldn't hurt to let them take a look at it. Otherwise best just to deal with Dell. They at least warranty their repairs and hopefully know what their doing. Good luck

yes, the only way you can get dell to repair your laptop for free is to not tell dell the TRUTH. accident damamge by user isnt covered by standard warranty. based on the symptoms, your motherboard is 100% dead.
you can chat with dell online technical support, just tell them laptop suddenly cant power on, and YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHY.

As someone said already what you're trying to do is considered as fraud, it's illegal and therefore not allowed to be discussed on these boards.
