I see that Dell UK and Australia have T9500 processors available and Dell UK has 7200 RPM drives available. I'd be all over a Studio 17 (plum...sweet!) but very dissapointed that Dell chose to stop short on what could be the ultimate gap filler between XPS and Inspiron. For a machine that is targeted towards the media crowd, I would at least expect 7200 rpm drives for all of those late night video editing sessions. And, the T9500 just makes sense. Why stop at the T9300? Argh!

-
bacause no one would be stupid enough to play a couple of hundred dollars for just 100mhz more which make insignificant difference.
-
...except for everyone in the UK and me I guess?

I tend to keep laptops for 4 years and my purchase methodology is to get the best gear that you can buy that is not easily upgradable or replaceable. Like the BlueRay option for example. Won't buy it now but will pick it up later when it becomes a cheap upgrade. Yes, hard drives are typically easy upgrades but still a hassle. And I won't even begin to touch a CPU upgrade in a lappy...totally not worth it. But for the type of work that I do (not just browsing the net and sending e-mail) all of the ponies you can harness just makes sense.
-
And besides that, Mr. Evangelist, your answer makes no sense whatsoever because Intel makes them available and then Dell decides to allow them in certain markets but not others. I can't help it you can't afford the best CPU available. Heck, I'd buy the X9000 if it were available, but that would totally be outside of this bracket. T9500 vs. T9300 is a no brainer in my budget.
-
...but let's keep sending the message to Dell USA that we Americans are so stupid that we like corporate America deciding what options are best for us. I mean, let's just go ahead and agree that the Dell decision to make the T9500 unavailable is exactly what you and I and every other person out there that is interested in Studio 17 needs. I'm so glad that I have people like you looking out for my needs. Jeez. Let's start telling Ford, GM, Toyota and all the other that we really only need one engine and two colors for all of our vehicle choices. That would make life so much easier.
-
Further, I inquired with Dell chat today about these options and they told me that these options are not available because that's what the XPS line is for. So then why are they available over seas where the XPS line is also available? It just doesn't make sense.
-
I'm sorry are you going to attack me now because the Studio 17 has any feature that I currently want and or need and I will be completely satisfied by my purchase?
-
No, bigmo. The attack is because someone would call me stupid for wanting more options. If you are satisfied with your choice, given your budget, the I'm envious. No joke...being straight up here. But I have a 3K budget that I can fill. The XPS far exceeds it and a fully decked Studio 17 doesn't fill that budget. I've got my heart set on fast 7200 rpm drives and and T9500 and can't get it with the Studio 17 and that frustrates me. But if you call me stupid for wanting/needing it then I'll fight back. Limiting choices is rarely a good thing when those same choices are made available to other groups...that's all.

the Studio 17 is apparently supposed to be marketed towards media heads.. yet dad makes a good point. 7200RPM hard drives are a must for any video editor. I could live without the T9500 personally, but it's all good.
dad i suggest another company -
lol nice quadruple post......

You are right Direct. It looks like the HP Dz7t might fit the bill. It has the T9600 as an option in addition to the T9500 and it has 7200rpm drives.
I'm not much on brand loyalty but I've always been pleased with Dell in the past. My 4 1/2 year old Inspiron 8600 is on it's last leg but it's been a good one for me. Top of the line when we purchased it for about $4600 and it's carried me through a lot of jobs. I expect my next purchase to do the same. -
Yeah qaz...rarely do I have that much to say.
Crap...there I go again...a double post. Sorry. -
Why did you write 5 replies in a row...
Dell will change the hardware and prices options for their benefit every two Friday. The online chat representative use pretty the much the same building menu you see on dell.com.
Also you sound like a snob when you say things like "I can't help it you can't afford the best CPU available". These message boards are not made for that kind of bragging. -
Sorry Sebastian...didn't know I had to put all my thoughts into one post. I thought this was a discussion board and the very nature of discussions are to share thoughts as they occur.
Thanks for the tip on the Friday refresh though. That will be very helpful.
And I didn't intend to come across as a snob but wywern209 can't speak for everyone by stating that "no one is stupid enough...blah blah blah". Each of us have our own needs and our own budget. When people say things like what wywern209 stated it is usually because they want the whole world to be satisfied with whatever he/she chooses. And like I said earlier, I'm envious of everyone who is completely satisfied with the configuration they choose and especially if it falls within their budget. My biggest complaint is not having the same choices that other markets have. If it makes sense for Europeans to have T9500s and 7200rpm drives then why can't we have the same choice in the U.S.?
A thousand apologies to all that I have offended. I'll try to be more concise from now on. -
No harm done.
I had the same kind of frustration when I bought my Studio. Their harware options and pricing is frustrating. It was an extra $200 for the T8100 to T9300 upgrade and Lenovo had the same upgrade for $120. They also had the T8300 for and extra $50 compare to the T8100. They took the T8300 option away and I waited two weeks with no change.
It's not worth the extra wait and money for 300mhz so I jsut got the 8100. The T9300 is quite a performer and should be quite enough. When you think about it all the big box resselers are still offering laptops with T5000 series processors.
As for the hard drive most people who do video or audio editing and programming will probably have a main desktop and use a laptop as an on the go solution.
If I were you, since you want to get the best and keep it for a while, I'd wait for the Intel Centrino 2 to start rolling out. -
Two posting in a row... oh oh
Like you said you have a pretty big budget. New Dell Vostro 2510 has appeared on the dell.CA site with T9500 and 7200HD options.

Thanks Sebastien. I depend on the lappy for 95% of my work. I'm on the road almost every week and when at home I still find myself ditching the desktop since most of my production work is already on the laptop.
I'm getting ready to begin work with a new client and wanted to start off with a fresh rig but I guess I can wait it out a bit longer. The old 8600 has a busted screen hing and flops around quite a bit. Plus I'm getting blue screens off and on during bootup over the past few weeks. It's way past due for wiping it clean and reloading everything...not only to refresh the OS but also ditch all the crap I've accumulated but won't need at the next job. The past 18 months kept me too busy to even do that with the care and patience it deserves. I'm sure Centrino-2 might will bring some more options but Dell is taking their time with their releases. I'm anxious to hit the ground running with a fresh machine and don't necessarily need what Centrino-2 brings to the table. We'll see what the next couple of weeks brings. Hopefully the Friday refresh will help.
