Does anyone know the manufacturer of the HD Audio in the Studio 17's? All it comes up as in Device Manager is "High Definition Audio Device" and the driver provider is Microsoft.

The chipset is Mobile Intel PM/GM/GS 965:GL960. Is there an HD Audio driver associated with this chipset from Intel? I have not been able to find anything yet.

I rang dell support on this - with driver update mine still crackled. So the support chap got me to turn the WiFi card off. Sound was much better. That was my fix apparently

I said this wasn't really a good fix, and he said new drivers are in the making, but couldnt say when they'd be out.

So I either have sound or Wifi. Great :(

Yeah... not a good fix hannay! Loose you mobility to fix your audio? It sounds more like a noise problem with wi-fi card design than it is a driver problem, but we will see. If they can't solve it I may have to go and purchase another mini internal wi-fi card to see if that fixes the problem. I even have an 8.02-11g only card that I can try in a pinch to solve the problem, but that wouldn't work long-term since I just bought an 8.02-11n wi-fi router!

Does anyone know if the audio chip in the Studio 17 is on the motherboard, or on a mini-pci card? It may be possible to change that out too to fix the problem.

Make sure you post here when the new drivers come out so we can all give them a try.

BTW, somms... thanks for the post and the links in your sig!

update on this: I decided to contact Dell again saying that turning the WiFi off was not a fix, and they installed some newly released WiFi Drivers (not currently on the Dell website) and it has made things better, but not perfect. Still get the odd jump/crackle when listening to music / watching BlueRay :(

You should have gotten them to give you the link for the file and downloaded it yourself so that you could share it with the rest of us. ;)

I have the file as it was left on my desktop.

2 reasons I wouldn't really want to share it:

    1) If you install and it goes wrong, I don't want to be blamed!!
    2) The install looked a little odd when it was ran, so it's certainly not the final release.

The good news is that they are obviously working on this.

I'll reconnect to dell chat over the weekend, or on Minday and see if i can take this further.

The sound is certainly better, but still get problems.

Since I have the 2 WLAN cards installed into the Studio, downloaded and installed the Broadcom BACS utility above to set up teaming between the 3 NICS (2 Wireless-N & 1 Gigabit NIC) for load balancing. Works rather well since I can shut either radio off one at a time and streaming high-def video over wireless doesn't even burp ;)

Using a dual-band WRT-600N router flashed w/DD-WRT firmware have the Dell Wirless 1510 card set to disable 802.11b/g band so that it connects to 802.11a radio in the router and the Dell Wireless 1500 card has the 802.11a band disabled so that it will connect to 802.11b/g radio in the WRT-600N...

Sorry for the above...kinda off-subject don't want to completely derail this thread...

    just to clarify.....

on my studio...i occasionally get this sound like a cd skipping......sometimes it sounds like bullets almost...b/c a short part of the song is repeating really really fast.....it only lasts for a moment.....and it only occurs once every hour or so....but still it can get annoying

is this the popping you guys are referring to?

I tried the driver you posted somms, and the one they have posted on the website now... still have popping in the audio.

I also notice a lot of noise during hard drive reads when I am using my earbuds to listen to anything. I think some of these problems may be cross-talk related in the motherboard and add-in cards.
