Hey guys, I was lurking around the forums for a little bit after a "dell studio fan speed" google search led me here.

    Anyways, I've got a dell studio 17 C2D T6400 @ 2ghz, 4 gigs of ram and the integrated graphics.

I came across the program that I found here called I8kfanGUI to control my fan speeds (im really paranoid about using a laptop actually on my lap doing anything more than watching the desktop) and turn them all the way up while its on my lap. I managed to get it to turn the fan speeds on full blast, and then the apparently common frozen desktop that only comes back after 10ish seconds for a half a second. (im on vista home prem 64 bit and already read about disabling the signed driver check though F8 on boot)

And now I cant get it to stop freezing. There isnt alot of use in a program that does what you wants and then completely crashes your computer.

    Any help is appreciated.

Oh and, Hello, my name is Royce.

    Welcome to NBR, Royce. ;)

I8kfanGUI was made for older Dell models, and is not guaranteed to work on newer ones, like the Studio series.

Out of curiosity, why do you want the fans on full blast all the time? Have you checked your temperatures? If not, go get HWMonitor, a good freeware temperature monitor, and post what kind of temps you're getting.

I have dell studio 1737 with P 8400, 4 gb ram, Ati Radeon...
    Vista Ultimate X64 on both.
the fan comes sometimes for no particular reason for about 10-15 second than back off.
Please note it is brand new.
My old Studio 1535 sometimes freeze on medium fan speed for long time, sometimes it is caused by some program, FireFox as well.
I suggest you to reinstall the Windows.

My temperatures are fine, the laptop does not get hot at all (only the ram is hot enough to feel through the plastic backing) They are around 30-40 browsing the web, youtube, msn, etc.

I know I dont need to have them on full, as this is a brand new laptop and my temperatures are fine, but consider it a concerned nerd looking out for his stuff lol.

Like right now im idling at 25

And I have no reason to reformat, the computer still works.

Edit: just discovered something. while messing around with some settings while its in its lagged out state (i dont think i've EVER been so precise with a mouse) i managed to click "show temperatures only, no fan control." THE COMPUTER IS RUNNING FINE AGAIN! BUT! I still need to be able to control the fans... Ill mess around a bit more and keep you guys updated, while still updating myself as im using my moms laptop right now looking for ideas.

edit 2: I clicked on manual fan control to give that a shot. using the box right beside where you choose your "main operating mode" and set the first and second fan on high and low. clicking apply makes the computer freeze for about 2 seconds, but then it returns and everything is smooth! fans are still on full blast and I can do stuff! NICE! Ill let you guys know if I run into any problems (freezing, fans shutting off, etc)

    My father idling in 40.
    Something like:
    HDD: 40-42
    GPU: 45-47
    CPU: 40-45

In Bulgaria is summer. The temperatures are 30 plus C.

Woo! So far so good. No freezes, crashes or glitches so far. Fans still on full blast and im getting readings for the CPU, GPU, RAM, and the Chipset.

If anyone is wondering, with nothing with firefox open im at...

    CPU: 22 (core1) 19 (core2)
    GPU: 29
    MEM: 28
    CHIP: 37

I cant get any readings for the HD but no worries :D

Running the fans on high wears them out and uses more battery life. Replace the thermal pad with AS5 and let the computer manage the fan speed on it's own.

How can someone be running a Studio 17 with Fans at full blast??? Mine went to MAXiumum speed, when I flashed the BIOS to A06, and the Fans sounded as loud as my ESKY co-Comanche RC chopper they were so loud.

Yup, fans on full blast will be very loud; but whether this is a problem for you, that is personal choice. Me, I'd rather have it run as silent as possible. Undervolt, apply AS5 and let the computer control the fans.

Well I couldn't hear the fan from the laptop over the sound of my air conditioner if I wanted to, so thats no biggy. I've never really been bothered by the sound from the fans as I do own a gaming desktop with 6 fans.

If I actually listen to it they arent that loud anyways. Maybe some of you guys just like complete silence? :p

Also, Im not concerned about the battery life, I've got the 9 cell and can almost get 5 hours on power saver with the brightness at about 30%.

Also, i'd rather have to replace a $5 fan than a CPU.

I got wierd looks on a regular basis when I turned my old inspiron e1705 on in lecture halls, especially before i got the fan gui program and just set it to max all the time.

True enough. I can see why if its a completely quiet area how a fan would be noticeable and distracting I guess.

Oh, do these studio 17's actually have 2 fans or just 1? When I took the back off of it I only recalled seeing 1 fan over the CPU... is there 2?

Edit: Is there a way to get a HD temp reading?

Yup, HW Monitor will do the job, as will many other apps.

Eh, not so much that we like complete silence (I have music playing 24/7), just that we don't care for localized 747s overwhelming everything else ;)

Having the Studio17's fan go to max speed reminds me of my old Delta 7krpm drive!

I don't think your CPU is going to fail if you let the computer manage the speed of the fan. Oh, and the only replacement fan I could find was on Fleabay for about $40.
