Hi all. Just received my new Studio 17 and it's absolutely brilliant!
One thing I wasn't sure about - I have LED screen, and in Display Settings it is recognised as: "Generic PnP monitor on ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650" , and the only refresh rate possible is 60 Hertz. Question is - isn't it a bit low? Is it normal for that screen?
-
60 Hertz is the normal
-
Yes
It is standard for LCD monitor -
Thanks guys!

60 is normal for an LCD. When using a CRT you want 75Hz but 60 is smooth on a LCD.
-
But for LCD monitor/screen it is normal and nowadays standard! -
Just to throw in a few points of why the difference exist (or one point we'll see how this goes lol).
CRTs use a cathode gun to shoot the electrons onto the screen and draw the picture. The refresh rate determines how fast that gun shoots electrodes onto the tube and as a result the speed at which the picture is refreshed. Since the gun it shooting directly out at you and at a very leveled pattern if it is too slow the flicker will get caught by your eyes and cause eye strain (it is very easy to see if you record a video of a CRT).
LCDs don't draw pictures the same way. They draw them by turning on and off the respective pixels almost instantly. As a result there isn't any flicker for your eyes to pick up on making a slower refresh rate more than enough. As in reality, the refresh rate doens't mean anything for the LCD. -
Some video card drivers allow slight variations on LCD's (this may also depend on the LCD in question). My 174.31 drivers from Dell right now (Inspiron 1520) give me 63 Hz or 60 Hz; at one point I also had drivers that allowed 59 Hz and 53 Hz, the latter being turned on in power-saving mode. I couldn't tell a difference between any of them. Theoretically the lower the Hz the less power should be consumed, but I don't know how much impact this practically has on LCD's - it does make a potentially important difference on processors and video cards.

i have a dell 2408wfp ..just got it and its really nice...it has 60mhz refresh rate,,,,which i too consider normal.....
