I have an M1330. It is my first unit that has the slide to scroll areas on the touchpad. I like that a lot. I actually prefer the pointing stick of the Thinkpads, but this scrolling feature makes up for a lot!

Just got a Studio 17. It of course does have scrolling on the touchpad (slide along the right edge), but the Studio 17 scrolling is not smooth. It does it in increments, which are adjustable in the setup software, but still not smooth.

The M1330 scroll also will glide after liftoff, until you touch again. You can accelerate ahead, and it continues. I can't get the Studio 17 scroll to work smoothly like that.

Are these two touchpads from the same manufacturer? Might there be another driver that would give me the smoothness of the M1330?

The Studio 17 touchpad is probably an Alps model. Alps are known to be rather crappy touchpads - I don't even know of a reason that Dell would be using them (does ANYONE know? price?). You can try downloading the touchpad driver for the M1330 and see if it works/is any better. The M1330 has a synaptics touchpad, which is regarded to be much better.
Regarding hardware, you can't really do anything about it - I'm working on a mod myself for my Latitude, but I'm not really sure if it's possible.
