I'm sorry if this has been discussed already, tried and search and couldn't find what I was hoping.

I'm looking at a new laptop. All these years I've been using matte screens (laptops and desktops) and I don't think I could appreciate a glossy screen. However, this laptop is coming our of my pocket and I cannot justify the cost of a business laptop just to get a 17" matte WUXGA screen.

Has anyone swapped the glossy screen from a Studio 17 with a matte WUXGA screen? I know I can get a decent used Studio 17 for $500 or less and then spending another $300-$500 for a new screen stays in my budget. But has it been done successfully?

    Thanks.

From what I have read around it would be a massive pain in the .

You would have to dissassemble most of the base, disconnect all of the cables, and remove the lid and then seperate the bezel from the top of the lid. I am assuming the above as I have never done it, but there don't appear to be any screws.

I would also suggest that if your budget is around 1K to just go out and get a new laptop with 1920x1200 WUXGA screen, or if you want used; look at the dell outlet as they have some crazy deals.

It is doable to replace the scree, just be aware of the pain it will be to do.

Its not really that hard, it took me about 15 minutes to get everything off, but you got to know what you are doing :)

If you don't know what you are doing then don't try it.

If you have a vague idea of what you're doing then try it, but set aside a lot of time. It's not overly difficult, but it's very time consuming. The person who did it in 15 minutes has no doubt done it before, and they don't mention whether this included putting it back together again.

I don't imagine a reason why you couldn't replace the glossy with the matt. I myself prefer the matt screens, but like yourself just cannot justify spending the money on a business class notebook.
