Studio 17, Vista 64, DVD ejection problem
    ----------------------------------------

I have a number of OS's installed on my Studio 17. One of them being a copy of Vista 64.

I downloaded all the available 64bit drivers from the dell sight, and used the default Microsoft drivers for the others.

Everything works very well. But there is 1 major problem I've noticed, and perhaps someone has found a solution.

    1) The DVD drive I have is a TSST TS-T633A (TSSTcorp = Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology corp.). I let Windows install the default drivers from microsoft.com.
But there are major problems while trying to eject discs. When attempting to eject a disc through the keyboard (Fn+F10) or the mediabar eject button, Vista will lock up for 5-10 minutes.... then comes back. I can eject a disc successfully through the explorer context menu however.

    edit:
    ------

I got it working. I downloaded the 32bit version of "Dell System utilities" and that seems to have done it:

hmmm... it works for a while, then the system seems to freak again. Device Manager then no longer recognizes the DVD drive, and Vista locks up for about 5 minutes until it becomes responsive again. The only way to get the DVD drive back is to reboot....

That was the same problem I was having with Vista x64, so I did have to go back to Vsita x86, it sucks, I have 4GB and can't really use 'em.... :(
Tell me if you find a workaround for this...
    Thanks!

rafucho: what driver do you have loaded under Vista32? Under Vista64 I'm using the default Microsoft driver ver.:6.0.6001.18000 from 6/22/2006.

I have the same problem running Vista x64 with my Blu-Ray drive. I just live with it as you can still open Computer -> Right click DVD Drive and select Eject without any crashing.

mine works... DVD is running default MS driver 6.0.6000.16386

    A04 BIOS
    Chipset Drivers from Dell site

Mine is still running in ATA mode as I still can't get the AHCI to not blue screen.

My system came with the latest BIOS (version A04) preloaded. It doesn't look like a BIOS issue, as it only happens when I use the Shortcut keys to eject (Fn+F10 and Media Panel Eject key)... and some apps.

But eject works from the context menu in explorer. So It looks like a software driver issue.

That's exactly what I've been thinking. I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that it's a Vista issue with AHCI mode.

Time to search Microsoft's knowledge Base....

You can't really simply switch from ATA mode to AHCI in Vista. It will cause a blue screen or other issues with drive access. Your vista should have been installed at the factory, with AHCI set. You have to go through driver hell to change this setting later.

    ??

I installed my copy of Vista x64. Dell doesn't support x64, nor do they factory install it on the Studio line (yet).
I also never said I was switching from ATA to AHCI mode. Simply that there is a problem with the Studio Line running x64 under AHCI and ejecting DVD's in certain circumstances.

Steb... did you nuke the hidden Dell fat16 partition before your reinstall?

nope. I kept both that and the restore partition.

I installed Windows Server 2008 (64bit trial version) the other day on a partition, and the eject button works fine. funny thing is is that WS2008 and Vista SP1 share the same code base, and the same kernel.

So it must be a 64bit driver issue. I'll run a comparison of loaded drivers later to see what's different.

OK... so, the same OS, the same problem... I've reinstalled Vista 64bit with AHCI and Flash cache enabled in BIOS. During install, I erased C: partition, and created it again, and after that formatted it. Installation went without any problems. Now eject button works fine! Both Fn+F10 and eject on the above keyboard cappacitors.
Hope this solved problem with You...

I did the exact same thing when I first received my laptop yet I still have intermittent problems with the eject button. It only works about half the time. I am just hoping this is addressed in a BIOS update. It seems like the sound issue and eject button issue are big enough problems that it should be addressed quickly. I just don't see that happening unfortunately.
