    Hello there,

i'd like to install Windows 7 on my Studio 1735.

    Questions are:

    - Do i have to install the, quite old, Dell Notebook System Software driver?

    - Do i have to install the (Vista) Chipset drivers from the Dell Download page or can i download the newer ones from Intel.com? If yes to the latter, which one do i need?

    - What about the ATI HD 3650 Video drivers, should i use the , old, ones´from the Dell Download page or can i find newer ones from ATI?

    - can i just use the drivers delivered with Win 7 only and use Windows update for some uninstalled devices?

Unfortunately, Dell only provides Vista drivers, there will be no Win7 for the 1735.

What are your experiences on installing Win7 on a Studio 17(35), by the way?

    Thanks a lot

    Daniel

I've been running Windows 7 Pro for the last few weeks. I actually didn't put that much effort into finding drivers. I let Windows update do its job, and used Windows Update Catalog for anything else left behind as seen in Device Manager.

Whatever doesn't seem to work after using Microsoft's driver, try using the drivers provided by Dell.

I do have to say, I am having a bit of an issue with the video chipset though. With Windows 7, I've been getting a lot of BSODs. I first suspected the video drivers because every time it crashes, my laptop reverts to some basic resolution when it shows the BSOD. It goes to something which I think is 640x480, except the picture isn't stretched to meet the LCD's sides, but just a 640x480 BSOD with black borders centered in the monitor, which seems to still be running in 1440x900.

I replaced the drivers with ATI's drivers and drivers from Windows Update catalog, and I seem to have fewer BSODs now. My ATI drivers are version 8.632.1.2000, from 17/08/2009. BSODs only happen when I leave the system on for a long period of time, even with hibernation.

Now, I believe the reason I have BSODs are because of overheating issues, possibly related to the video hardware. I never have BSODs at home with my 1735 on its cooling pad, but far more often elsewhere. It's worth saying that I never had overheating issues with Vista, though. I believe the culprit may be that the fans don't kick in strongly enough often enough. I do overclock the video card, but only for playing games, I always leave it at default clocks or underclocked when I'm not gaming.

Other than that, everything works fine. I'm happy with how much faster my system feels, especially on startup. It seems like it takes half as much time to start up now than when it had Vista. I ought to pop the cover under my 1735 and take a look, though. I may have added too much thermal paste in trying to cool down my system, but that was several weeks before I had installed Windows 7 so I'm sure these problems aren't a result of me meddling with the hardware.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

EDIT: Win7 has installed almost all drivers and downloaded an update for the ATI 3650. There is only one (!) unknown device in the device-manager. I think its the infrared-controller.

i still dont know if it makes sense to install Dell's Notebook System Software and Intel's Chipset drivers.
    Any experiences?

    Hi there

Its usually not needed, I only have trouble with my 3G card (5530), the rest Windows found and installed no problem, if you are having no issues, then don't worry.

    enjoy 7

Daniel: The Unknown Device is the infrared controller, an updated driver can be downloaded from the support page for the Dell Studio 1737 - it works perfectly with the 1535 and 1537.

I would also recommend installing the newest chipset drivers from http://downloadcenter.intel.com, as they contain an updated SATA driver.

    Cheers!

Which Chipset driver do i have to download then? Got a Studio 1735 with intel Core Duo 8100
The Intel detection Tool and even Everest didnt recognize my Motherboard :-/

I already installed the Intel Matrix Storage in its newest Version.

Any other Drivers i should update to get better performance?
Win 7 gives my System 5,5 points.

Your 1735 has the Intel PM965 chipset.

Finally, i installed the INF Update Utility - Zip Format Version 9.1.1.1019

It did almost nothing to my system, my Windows-Performance Index climbed from 5,5 to 5,6 for CPU and Memory. GPU & Harddisk stayed at the same level as before installing.

So,the chipset driver it doesnt make much sense on Windows 7, does it?

    Hi,

Just out of curiosity did you have any problems with windows 7 not recognizing the multimedia controller? I have a 1737 and that is the only thing which I have no idea what I need to install.

    Cheers

Several months ago I installed my on my Studio 1735. After a clean install, the Dell Media Direct, Web cam, fingerprint reader and sound card did not work. Each time I installed the drivers and the software apps, I would reboot and get a message stating that I need to install the software.
Somehow, I did get the sound card to work, but not the three software pkgs.
The chat session with Dell revealed nothing other than they were working on the issue for the software. Yesterday,. I did a chat session to see if they had in fact come up with updates. I was basically told to go to the drivers page (been there) and look for updates. I told the rep the OS offered was only Vista 32 or 64 bit- and was sure he had no idea of what we were talking about. I had told him I had a ghost image of my drive from before I installed W7 and had reverted back to that. Shortly after, he tried to sell me additional years on the warranty- AS IF that had something to do with the software issue. I basically got nowhere. He then provided me with an 800 number to call and I aksed what that was to- he told me a higher level tech support. I did call and it was for out of warranty customers.
All in all I am extremely frustrated and disappointed with DELL
I asked the rep IF I were to buy a Studio today and since there were compatibility issues with the above software products, would it NOT have the Dell Media direct, Web cam and fingerprint reader? He did not answer that.
So if anyone has any info on this I would appreciate a posting on this
    Thanks all

hi there, im new here so please bare with me.

i have a studio 1735 (2.66ghz, 4gb 800 ram, 3650m, 2x 200gb hdd, 1920x1200 screen, bluray player etc) and installed Win 7 Pro 64bit and every single driver installed straight up, nothing was missed except the quickset drivers which do not get installed in win 7 even during any updates.

my laptop has not missed a beat since installing the RC-7100 last august, then i installed the retail version in october, so i dont understand why some people are having problems.

the saddest thing i see happening with win 7 is many people still think you have to install drivers for everything like you do with vista or XP and if they knew they dont need to, they might not have so many issues.

i have not updated any of my drivers since installing win 7, except i may have installed the ati 3650m 9.11 drivers not long ago, but usually if its not important, i wouldnt bother installing updated drivers for anything on this laptop, everything works fine so i dont mess with it.

on the topic of the quickset drivers again, you must download the vista quickset drivers and install separately as last time i looked, dell do not support win 7 on the studio 1735 and there is no win 7 quickset driver made for this model.

sadly my laptop shipped with vista and the keyboard backlight worked but even with the vista quickset driver on win 7 my backlight feature will not work any more and dell told me because i put win 7 on this laptop, they cant help me to get th backlight feature going again, which is gay because this laptop when new cost $3,200 fully spec'd so i would have expected it to work in win 7.

anyway, they are pricks to deal with, and im sick of talking to indian support staff who i cant understand, or they have issues understanting what im asking of them. its ok when i actually get to talk to an aussie or an american staffer but its very rare for this to happen.

if anyone knows a work around for keyboard backlight, please post it up for me.

    cheers everyone.

BTW my next laptop will be a 15" HP business grade laptop, not buying another dell again.

The backlight shouldn't be related to anything in Windows. Sure there's not a bios option somewhere? My Studio 1555's backlight works just fine in Windows 7, even on the base install, before any drivers or anything get installed from Windows update or manually.

yep i know its not related to windows, thats why i said to download the quickset drivers and install separately.

dell told me i can activate the backlight by pressing the Fn+right arrow key that has the little keyboard on it, or by enabling it in the quickset interface, but neither of these makes the backlight work, so im thinking my laptop has an issue. when i press the Fn+arrow key i get a small box on my screen near the clock indicating its on but still nothing.
the only things that light up on my laptop are the NumLock light, CapLock light, battery indicator, hdd activity light and the wifi light, nothing else on the panel below the screen lights up, nor the keyboard.

i cant be stuffed calling them again, hopeless to deal with.
