    Not at all...completely optional man.

I was just having problems with the original AuthenTec Fingerprint driver that shipped w/my Studio17 and the newer HP driver fixed my problem.

Also ran across newer WLAN and BIOS, decided to post those as well! ;)

    Which one?
And how do I update? Because I have downloaded the package, and tried the indie..yet it keeps saying 8.477 when I reboot.

There is a ridiculous amount of banding on my desktop. With a faded image, it looks absolutely like garbage because it is all garbled.

I am on Vista 32 and am really frustrated by this machine.

I have a problem with the AuthenTec driver, even after updating to this version it is no better. Vista repeatedly makes the 'device detected' and then 'device lost' noises until I disable the AuthenTec under Device Manager.

I also have the severe banding problems kylerg mentions. When I try to update the Catalyst to version 8.8, the installer runs but the version of my drivers does not update.

And when watching video - or doing anything for that matter - the video driver frequently crashes and occasionally bluescreens.

How do I get the video driver to upgrade properly?

You should uninstall the previous version of the drivers first. However, be aware that the catalyst drivers don't install over older drivers if they are not compatible with the gpu they detect. Are you sure you have the correct drivers. There are usually 2. One for integrated components and one for stand alone cards.

PeterDw - extremely good question - I am not sure if I have the right drivers. Should I be using the integrated components ones if this is a card that shipped in the laptop?

It sounds as though I need to now
    - uninstall the drivers (using Device Manager, correct?)
    - make sure I have the correct version
    - use the tool to patch the correct drivers
    - install shiny new drivers

    ... am I missing anything?

The complete uninstall / reinstall did the trick. Now I will leave it on all night with the external monitor plugged in, and see if I am still afflicted by the crashing. Again -- thank you all for the help.

Been trying to install the ethernet driver, somehow, the zip files from broadcom is incomplete.

Also, does anyone know where to get the Intel ICH8M-E LPC Interface controller-2815 driver? Only these 2 are the only ones with issues under device manager.

There's an 8.9 of the Catalyst now available at ATI as well. I just installed it. I have been experiencing bluescreens STILL with 8.8 when an external monitor is plugged in. 8.9 again advances the date on the driver to 8/20/2008. Fingers crossed on this one.

For advanced users only: Linked above is the Windows Update Catalog site where you can search for latest drivers by name. No fancy executable files here for installing these drivers, they are compressed .cab files that must be installed via the device manager. BTW: They are all WHQL-signed since they are from the Microsoft site.

Does anyone have a copy of the Fingerprint driver from HP, I can't get it to download from there.
