Okay..so I have formatted the hard drive and installed Vista Ultimate
and all of the drivers including Media Direct and Quickset.

But, the remote control no longer works.

It worked before with the OEM software.

Anyone have any suggestions? There are no bangs in the
device manager so I can't imagine I am missing a driver.

Thanx to any kind soul in advanced.

The remote control fits into the express slot and there is an infrared receiver built into the front of the until below (I believe) the touchpad.

I don't know if yours did not come with the remote if it has has the infrared receiver built into it. Without it the remote is useless.

I bought my 1737 from QVC and its what the package came with.

I found these drivers in the device manager --

    ITECIR Infrared Receiver (EC)
    Microsoft eHome Infrared Transciever

Shouldn't that be all that I need?

Before the format, Windows Media Player worked with the remote.
    Now it does not.

Wait a second? I've configured various Studio 17's and how do people get the option or just get a remote included with their system???

are they all supposed to have them?

There used to be an option back when I purchased my 1520 last year, but there isn't not on Dell.com. Dell probably yanked it as not too many people purchased it online I suppose.

Retail and TV are a seperate story as they need to compete with HP a lot more directly. So that is probably why he got one and you didn't. If it bothers you that much you can call up Dell Spare Parts and see what they can do for you.

    Back on topic,

I assumed all you needed was the IR driver, but you seem to have that. I never had a remote so I'm not certain about anything more than installing the driver. You could check the driver disk Dell sent with the Studio to be sure they haven't included anything extra in there? You can all hunt down options in Windows Media Player or the IR stuff if possible to see if something stands out as why.

    Thanks.

I contacted Dell and and they were clueless.

I had a Belarc Advisor PDF of the system before the format and I have
beeen comparing the drivers. So far I can't see anything that stands out.

But it remains that the remote does not work. On my Media Center XP
my remote works in Media Center, Media Player and my video capture card
native software. It's like a keyboard. I am amazed I am having this problem.

Dell seems to think its a bad remote. But the remote worked before
the format. I checked the infrared light and it is coming on when I press
a button on the remote so it seems unlikely. Dell is sending me another
remote, though, since I could not convince the rep the remote seemed to
    be working.

    Ugghhhh.

I think I do still have some native Vista drivers installed that I did not
replace with the Dell drivers. I need to go through the resource CD
and install every driver I guess. What a pain.

    Solved!

Okay..I did some reading and I got the remote working.

    First, here is the solution.

You HAVE to install the drivers for the IR off the resource CD or
perhaps its on the Dell website, as well.

The driver is ITE IT8512 CIR Receiver Rev A07.

From what I have read, all 1737's have the IR port. The driver that Vista
installs itself (the one I had been using) uses the generic media center remote.

The Dell remote is proprietary (of course) and will not work with the
standard drivers. This keeps people from buying an MCE remote and
    using it on the 1737.

I have, though, read posts on other boards of people using the
MCE remote on the 1737 by changing the drivers.

I am new to this board and don't want to post any links, but the
    solutions are out there.

Well, at least I will be getting a spare remote from Dell. I was not looking
for another remote. I asked her/him specifically if there was a
driver I needed to install, and the answer was no.

I'm having this issue with my 1737. I bought one of the silver fronted PCI express sized remotes from ebay and it simply refuses to work. I looked at the remote through my mobile phones camera and couldn't see a light when I pressed the buttons (which I could on other remotes I have laying about) - does that mean the remote is a dud?

Since the thread's been dug up I'll add my two cents to the argument. If you look at the driver Dell provide, there's two reg files, one called Dell.reg and the other called MSFT.reg. The Dell one configures the IR driver for the Dell remote while MSFT.reg removes support for the MCE remote.

    Contents of Dell.reg:

Go to the Dell Drivers & Downloads page for your 1737. Under the "Input Device Drivers" section, the driver you want is the "ITE - Driver", for the "IT8521 CIR Receiver".

The install process takes like 3 minutes, you have to reboot, and then you're good to go.
