I have a Dell Studio 1737 that is out of warranty. We had to order parts to fix the hinge and screen edge plastic. I have also reinstalled Windows 7 on the system to provide a speed boost, but the big problem now is that the display only works sometimes (most of the time it does not). When it does work, everything from the BIOS screen to the actual Windows 7 login screen and beyond are visible. If the computer is shut down following a bout of the display working, the display is liable to stop working again. I can tell that the backlight is on because of the slight bleed that comes through. I can also tell that the computer is working fine because it works perfectly when hooked up to an external monitor. We have opened it up once again to check the connections inside (will check again tonight), but the problem persists. One weird thing that happens is that at times when waking from hibernation, only the BIOS screen and the "Resuming Windows" screen shows up but then nothing, just backlight. When plugged into an external monitor, everything works fine. Any suggestions for solutions? If I could find a fix, it would save a lot of money. Thanks!

I may suggest replacing the video cable, seems from what your saying the GPU is working, and the display is probably OK as well.

The cable runs from the LCD display screen to the Main board.

You beat me to the solution that they might look into. It does sounds like a video cable is not working or disconnected somewhere but I would try that fix as it won't cost to much for a replacement cable but make sure you look at the dell service manual for your right model Service Tag number and there they should list the video cable part number and you can ebay in my case find the right matching part and replace the current one and see if that fixes the problem. Also look online to get instructions as to how to take apart the LCD cover don't just go doing it without reading instructions on how to do it. I did that for a HP DV5 replacing the video cable because if you lower the screen it goes off or open to far it goes off or dim and replacing the video cable to the LCD was all it took to fix the problem. The previous owner used to grap the HP by the screen that what they told me so that lead me to conclude that handling of the laptop was the reason for the damaged LCD cable-you probably can't see the damage but the replacement cable did fix the blanking out screen and now it works.
