Is it possible to put the new dock from the studio line onto an XPS M1330?
Is there a download for it or can you only get it with a Studio model?
-
http://www.rocketdock.com/
you can try that, someone posted that a week ago comparing it to the Studio dock saying that it's better -
Can't. I downloaded it on the Dell officiall XPS support site with all the drivers and such, but it does not work because it doesn't let you install unless you have previously installed it before. So it means that only the newer XPS models can use the official Dell one.

I just received a new Inspiron 1720 from Dell on July 21st. and their Dock app was pre-installed, so it's not limited to the Studio line.
-
No, it is on all lines. Though all the ones that did not come preinstalled with it... cannot use it or install it since it detects for an instance of a previous installation.
-
Yes, you can download it and install it on an XPS M1530/M1330. I have it installed on mine (and it did not come with it from the factory).

Thanks for the responses. One more question, does it slow your PC down at all? Does it use minimal system resources?
-
-
it uses 12mb of ram... not much at all if you have a couple gigs of ram.
-
Yeah it uses like 10MB to 20MB of ram depending on how much crap you have on it. That's a bit less then the Windows Vista sidebar which uses about 23MB.
-
Can someone please tell me how you get past the annoying error box that says something along the lines of "To install Dell Dock you must have had a previous instance of Dell Dock installed before you can install it." ?
-
Forte, you got the wrong one. That's what happens with a new instal with the Dell Dock app from the m1530 drivers page. Download this one instead and the install should work.

this one is the one you want I think:
Direct Download of Dock (Source Dell FTP server) -

dell dock is nothing more a stunted version of objectdock which is Free.
those interested might also want to check out Logon Studio Vista Which allows you to change the background of the vista login screen (quite useful really)
both programs are free, take up little ram and can be found at stardock.com (along with loads of other windows customization software such as windowsblinds) -

I've been using the dock since last night and I definitely like it. This surprises me because I usually don't like to use any of these kinds of things but it definitely cleans up the desktop and makes getting to apps quicker. It also doesn't seem to slow anything down.
-
I have used rocket dock for a while now and it works wonders in cleaning my desktop up. Ill have to try the dell one and see if its better then rocket dock.
-
i have rocketdock and it is 10x better in my opinion. It uses less RAM then the Dell Dock- with 5mb roughly for the RocketDock and 15+ mb for Dell Dock. RocketDock also has a more mac'ish feel to it. (dell dock cannot be placed at bottom of screen and you cannot do as much to it imo)
-
What dock can be used with 64 bit vista? The rocketdock website says it is not supported.
-
id just use dell dock then since ram wont be an issue for you at all.
It doesn't have the bubble feature similar to apples dock that rocketdock does, but it's pretty cool.
(the link is near the top of this topic) -
I'm using the Dell dock on my XPS M1330 and rocketdock on my iMac running Vista. I'd say rocketdock is more OS X dock like. I might try it in my M1330.
-
it uses less memory to- definitely go rocket
-
-
ya thats why I use rocket... hmmm... try http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/
I know it supports vista 64-bit -
I tried the Dell Dock for a day until I did a clean re-install. IMHO it's a good step in the right direction but they didn't put too much effort into it. I went back to Rocketdock. With the right setting tweaking and downloaded features it's way ahead of what Dell has to offer. You also know Rocketdock have a group dedicated to making it better, Dell will take forever to add new patches.

Rocketdock vs Stardock.
Which one is the better one??? Whats the difference between the two?
Does RocketDock support Tabs like Dell Dock does? -
-
I dunno if I'd kinda feel like a traitor for downloading rocketdock and using those tabs that leopard uses.... Hmmm.. Decisions decisions... I admit it does look very nice though.
Studio Vista Dock, can you get it for an XPS?
