Inspiron Studio closes in, but still not quite up to XPS M1530. Thats all it is. Its just moving towards XPS styling, but its not fully there. Im pretty sure Dell will be coming out with a successor once Montevina comes out. By that time, the XPS M1530 will have a totally new style whereas the Studio will be the remnant of the M1530.
-
the xps line is more professional and is more powerful. the studio is nothing more than a luxury inspiron.
-
Except that Dell don't offer a 17" XPS which isn't fat and overpowered... if a M1530 existed with a 17" screen, I'd have bought it already, but a Studio 17 is close enough for my liking!
-
EXACTLY my opinion!
-
Just like I thought, new name for the inspiron (which seems to have made a name for itself as a poor quality laptop) and mid range GPU. It looks a bit thicker than the XPS 1530, is this just an illusion?
So if you want a full blown powerhouse, you get the XPS M1530 with the 8600, if you want a good middle of the road laptop you get the studio 15 and if you want a cheap web browser you get the inspiron 1525... -
The 17" Studio may not be as fat as the 17" Inspiron, but it is heavier according to Dell's listed specs:
1720:
Width: 15.5" (39.4cm)
Height: 1.5" (3.9cm) front - 1.7" (4.4cm) back
Depth: 11.5" (29.3cm)
Weight: Starting weight of 7.62 lbs (3.45 kg) with a 17" WXGA+ LCD, 6-cell battery, integrated graphics and a CD-RW/DVD drive.
17" Studio
Width: 15.46" (392.6mm)
Height: 1.18" (30mm) front / 1.69" (43mm) back
Depth: 11.36" (288.6mm)
Weight: Starting weight of 7.87 lbs. (3.57 kg) (17" WXGA TL display, 6 cell battery, DVD +/- RW, integrated graphics).
Only a quarter of a pound more for the Studio 17, but I wasn't expecting it to be heavier. And its rear end is essentially just as fat as the Inspiron's (1.69" instead of 1.7").
The Studio has some new colors. I wonder if the "plum" color is as dark as the "midnight blue," which looks black unless you shine light on it. -
Well, I think that's exactly what it's supposed to be.
-
Very true, but there was alot of speculation that this was the replacement for the current XPS line which I think is where that guy was coming from...
-
I would call the Studio more than just a "luxury inspiron".
It's got mostly the same features as the XPS except a slightly weaker GPU.
But features like LED screen, backlit keyboard, fingerprint reader, multitude of ports including HDMI, and more put it pretty high above the regular Inspirons.
Plus, it's only been out for a day.
Who knows what they'll add in time.
Montevina is around the corner

Good point.
Except for the glossy screen, I really like this new laptop. -
It's pretty close. The specs show the studio at 1.0 inches at the front, and 1.3 in the rear, while the XPS shows .93 at the front, and 1.38 in the rear.
So the Studio is thicker by .07 inches in the front, and thinner by .08 inches in the rear. That's pretty close. The studio starts at 6.11 lbs, and the XPS at 5.78 lbs. -
Well, I was getting my mind set on buying a new Studio 15. But I just looked at an m1330 sitting next to a 1525 at BestBuy, and realized that I much prefer the 13 inch size.
I really like the looks of the Studio, so hopefully Dell will release a Studio 13.
-
I'm not kidding when I say that Dell is working on a version that connects to a 54 inch external wall display. It's called the Studio 54.

It may be similar at each end but the Studio is thicker thru most of the body so it just looks like a fatter XPS from the side!
-
Yeah, the XPS has a tapered look that lends sleekness to it. Personally, I like the look of mine better than the Studio...though obviously I've never seen a Studio in person.
Studio vs. XPS ...
