I originally purchased an Inspiron from Dell. It died several times and was replaced with an XPS M1730. Last week, that died also - from overheating. Dell is sending me the Alienware M17x. First, let me say that I know Dell gave me an awesome deal. And I do appreciate it! (Though...they owe me BIG time for a year long screw up with my DFS account.) However, I hate how big and clunky the gaming systems are. I'm thinking of selling the Alienware device and buying 2 less powerful laptops. (My husband and I are always bickering about laptop time.) I'm looking for something thin and light weight but something that will perform - the only things we use our home laptop for is: itunes, internet, selling (a significant amount) & buying on EBAY, Office products. I'm just not sure what to buy - I'm pretty sure I want to stay with Dell - I like their extended warrantees that you can buy. Can anyone recommend a laptop that Dell is currently selling, that is light weight and will do all the things we want it to? Thanks!!

You can go for the current inspiron 15. It's plenty for what you need. Or the inspiron 14.

Personally, my next laptop is going to be an HP dv3t or dv4t. The dv3t is pretty new but quite a multitasking powerhouse.

You didn't mention screen size, but lighter machines are usually 14" and under.

Wow, you were using an XPS M1730 for typical office and internet browsing. I think I know why it died. It didn't feel the love.

Now, I bet if you threw a copy of Crysis on there and played it once in a while that laptop would have had more self esteem and would still be working for you now; safe in the knowledge than next week you were going to play a graphics intensive game on it for a few hours.

If you've got to have it from Dell, then the Inspiron would do the trick, but given your experience with Dell so far you might want to give them a little wider berth. Cin's advice is the best, fill out a form, take a number and wait in line. One of the notebook advisors will be along to see you shortly
